Simulation may be defined as the discipline whose objective is to imitate one or more aspects of reality in a way that is as close to that reality as possible; indeed, an apt synonym that is gaining some currency is artificial reality. Under this definition, simulation is a very old discipline. Probably the first applications of simulation were to scale models of various types of dynamical structures or mechanical devices. Man has always looked for ways to "try things out" before building the real thing; this is the motivation behind any form of simulation. Thus, simulation of communication systems is concerned with imitating some aspects of the behavior of communication systems. It is implicit in our use of simulation that the medium (so to speak) for carrying it out is the digital computer. Computer-based modeling and simulation of communication systems has only developed in the last 20 years or so, since the advent of modern digital computers. A variety of modeling and simulation techniques have been developed and described in widely scattered journals, but until now there has not been a single volume devoted to the subject. We have tried to provide a unified framework that describes both the disciplines involved and the methods of modeling and simulating communication systems and subsystems. In the electronic era, the first type of computer simulation, in today's use of the term, took shape in the form of analog computers.

The book covers the exploitation of computational models for effectively developing and managing large-scale wireless communication systems. The goal is to create and establish computational models for seamless human interaction and efficient decision-making in beyond 5G wireless systems. Computational Modeling and Simulation of Advanced Wireless Communication Systems looks to create and establish computational models for seamless human interaction and efficient decision-making in the beyond 5G wireless systems. This book presents the design and development of several computational modeling techniques and their applications in wireless communication systems. It examines shortcomings and limitations of the existing computational models and offers solutions to revamp the traditional architecture toward addressing the vast network issues in wireless systems. The book addresses the need to design efficient computational and simulation models to address several issues in wireless communication systems, such as interference, pathloss, delay, traffic outage, and so forth. It discusses how theoretical, mathematical, and experimental results are integrated for optimal system performance to enhance the quality of service for mobile subscribers. Further, the book is intended for industry and academic researchers, scientists, and engineers in the fields of wireless communications and ICTs. It is structured to present a practical guide to wireless communication engineers, IT practitioners, researchers, students, and other professionals.

Since the first edition of this book was published seven years ago, the field of modeling and simulation of communication systems has grown and matured in many ways, and the use of simulation as a day-to-day tool is now even more common practice. With the current interest in digital mobile communications, a primary area of application of modeling and simulation is now in wireless systems of a different flavor from the `traditional' ones. This second edition represents a substantial revision of the first, partly to accommodate the new applications that have arisen. New chapters include material on modeling and simulation of nonlinear systems, with a complementary section on related measurement techniques, channel modeling and three new case studies; a consolidated set of problems is provided at the end of the book.

Advances in computer, visual display, motion and force cueing and other technologies in the past two decades have had a dramatic effect on the design and use of simulation technology in aviation and other fields. The effective use of technology in training, safety investigation, engineering and scientific research requires an understanding of its capabilities and limitations. As the technology has as its primary goal the creation of virtual environments for human users, knowledge of human sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functioning is also needed. This book provides a review and analysis of the relevant engineering and science supporting the design and use of advanced flight simulation technologies. It includes chapters reviewing key simulation areas such as visual scene, motion, and sound simulation and a chapter analyzing the role of recreating the pilot's task environment in the overall effectiveness of simulators. The design and use of flight simulation are addressed in chapters on the effectiveness of flight simulators in training and on the role of physical and psychological fidelity in simulator design. The problems inherent in the ground-based simulation of flight are also reviewed as are promising developments in flight simulation technology and the important role flight simulators play in advanced aviation research. The readership includes: flight simulation engineers and designers, human factors researchers and practitioners, aviation safety investigators, flight training management and instructors, training and instructional technologists, virtual environment design community, and regulatory authorities.
