When considering what type of communication is required for development, the conventional answer of diffusion of technological innovation for modernization and growth is inadequate. Daniel Lerner and Everett Rogers describe traditional people as the greatest obstacle to development. Paulo Freire perceives communication as an instrument for changing society versus persuasion and extension for the maintenance of the status quo and social control. Andreas Fuglesang attacks the myth of people's ignorance and advocates cross-cultural communication. Third system communication organizes society with a reversal of authority. Development for the rural poor should, while not neglecting the sound economic base, be first and foremost development as if people mattered. Liberation from being passive recipients and toward an active citizenry is the essence of the new content of social development. By deduction, rural social development (RSD) will equally contain both these liberating and positively empowering aspects. Empowerment comes through participation. RSD communication will have to be participatory. Examples of participatory communication are the Kenyan DEP Program, indigenous nongovernmental organizations in West Africa, Organization of Rural Associations for Progress in Zimbabwe, and the Community Educational and Cultural Center in Kenya. This book is a collection of thought-provoking papers that investigate empowerment within the context of language, education, and technology. In the seventeen papers published in the book, local and international ELT practitioners and researchers have analysed their experiences within a range of socio-linguistic situations. Adding significant insights and depth to a previously under-researched area, the publication will be of interest not only to ELT teachers and students, but also to social science researchers in developing and marginalised countries. The book based on selected papers presented at the 2007 Aga Khan University, Centre of English Language seminar in Karachi exemplifies the issues of language and empowerment. The papers deal with complex educational and socio-cultural issues and force readers to undertake a cultural journey to see them from a different perspective. The collection of papers, whatever one’s teaching-learning context, will become an essential resource book for all English language teachers, scholars, and researchers interested in learning more about the success stories and problems facing language education in the developing countries, especially Asia today.

Cultural Diversity Families And The Special Education System written by Beth Harry and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Education categories.

This work explores the quadruple disadvantage faced by the parents of poor, minority, handicapped children whose first language is not that of the school that they attend. The author's ethnographic study of 12 low-income Puerto Rican American families serves to illustrate how the present structure of the special education system disempowers parents, excluding them from the decision-making processes that categorise their children as handicapped - and ultimately, often place them at a permanent educational disadvantage.
