Construction teams are usually complex, interdisciplinary and temporary, and, as such, the need for effective communication is crucial. However, published data regarding the manner in which individuals interact within the temporary project team is scarce, with little other than anecdotal evidence available. Recognizing this gap, Communication in Construction Teams provides a comprehensive overview of the literature on interpersonal communication and delivers a critical review of various research methods previously used in and outside the construction management field. Making use of Bales' interaction process analysis (IPA), a tool used successfully in many fields to collect interaction data, the text investigates the link between successful projects and the effectiveness of communication, finding that participants in the construction process exhibit regular patterns of interaction and, most significantly, that there are different patterns of interaction associated with successful and unsuccessful projects. Putting forward a number of practical suggestions to assist all actors involved in construction projects, this insightful publication will be of interest to researchers in the fields of building design and construction management.

This book focuses on the development of communication skills in the context of non-traditional procurement and construction projects. It helps readers to understand the fundamentals of non-traditional procurement, and highlights the inherent communication challenges that arise, as well as how to solve them. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which provides an introduction to communication, discussing the theoretical concepts and contextual nature of communication as well as its benefits. The second part goes into more depth, discussing communication in the context of construction project delivery and non-traditional procurement systems, what these two terms actually mean, and what effective communication looks like in these contexts. Part III offers solutions to the inherent challenges of communication, including the use of information and communications technology, while the book’s fourth and final part explores the future of construction communication. Given the scope of its content, the book represents a valuable asset for researchers, professionals and students in the areas of procurement management and construction management.

This book is a wide-ranging exploration of PR and communication in the construction industry, with a strong emphasis on communications theory, strategy and technique. The editors begin with an introduction to the UK construction industry and its supply chains, as well as various elements of PR in relation to the construction process. Subsequent chapters provide a strategic overview, practical examples, success stories, case studies and personal perspectives on PR for different parts of the built environment and reputational issues in construction. Chapters include expert advice on communications for architecture, planning, building consultancy, building products and manufacturers, general and specialist contractors, construction technology, infrastructure and communicating sustainability in the built environment. The conclusion looks at the current and upcoming reputational priorities for communicators in construction, as well as the top ten priorities for implementing PR as a strategic management discipline in the industry. This book is essential reading for all construction PR teams, students studying both for built environment and PR/marketing degrees and CPD courses, and anyone working in the built environment sector who needs to consider PR and marketing as part of their role.

Corporate communications--the way a firm relates to its clients, suppliers, shareholders, competitors and staff--has never been more important. More sophisticated and demanding clients, together with increased competition, have meant that construction firms need to build a sustainable corporate image to support marketing efforts. Corporate communications is a vital management function that needs to be planned in sync with the organisation's objectives and strategies. Until recently, however, the construction industry paid little attention to this aspect of management. This text shows how corporate communication processes and techniques can be managed more effectively, and examines how the general principles can be adapted to the dynamic and often turbulent environment of construction.

Konelio Tone PhD Thesis Title: Talking Past Each Other : The Impact of Cross-cultural Communication on Construction Project Management in Samoa. Effective communication has been identified as a key factor in the management of relationships in international projects. Lack of communication has been cited as one of the key reasons for the failure of change projects to meet their objectives. Communication problems have also been highlighted as one of the most significant emerging contemporary challenges facing construction project managers in an increasingly international market. Most research in the construction field has either used a purely quantitative approach or a qualitative preliminary phase just to explore a topic before focusing on a quantitative method. Dr Tone has applied a mixed methods strategy to develop a framework useful to approach communication within a crosscultural project environment. This iterative framework has a useful application to small island nations, developing countries and rural communities where multinational, multicultural and interdisciplinary teams are involved in managing projects. Dr Tone s work has provided an insight to a better understanding of project management within a foreign context . Principal Supervisor: Professor Martin Skitmore Associate Supervisor: Dr Max Quanchi External Associate Supervisor: Professor Lau Asofou Soo.
