Communications and National Integration in Communist China explores the unprecedented efforts of Mao Zedong’s government to unify a vast, diverse nation through mass persuasion and propaganda. Dr. Liu delves into the innovative, low-cost communication systems—wired loudspeakers, grassroots discussions, and mobile cinema teams—that reached even the most remote corners of China. This insightful analysis contrasts the radical, ideology-driven campaigns of Mao’s voluntarist vision with the more pragmatic, bureaucratic approaches inspired by Soviet models. From the Great Leap Forward to the Cultural Revolution, the book examines how the CCP sought to reshape not only social and economic systems but also the consciousness of its citizens. Dr. Liu’s comprehensive study offers a rare glimpse into the mechanics of Maoist mass communication and its lasting impact on national integration. By analyzing the successes and failures of these campaigns, the book provides valuable insights into the limits of propaganda as a tool for societal transformation. Perfect for historians, political scientists, and anyone interested in the intersection of ideology, media, and modern governance, Communications and National Integration in Communist China presents a compelling narrative of one of history’s most ambitious experiments in reshaping human consciousness. This book adopts the method of grounded theory in studying national communication campaigns in China, referred to as propaganda campaigns in the Chinese linguistic context. The study provides an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the ways in which the media in China fulfilled their function of building a Socialist spiritual civilisation and maintaining national integration during state propaganda campaigns. Explanations for the success and limitations of the campaigns are clearly expressed and combined with cautious statements on the limited role of the media in the process of national integration. The three major communication campaigns detailed in this book offer revelations regarding how to maintain mass morale and revive the national spirit at a time when economic pursuits and aspirations seem to be the top priority for individuals and institutions. A chief premise underpinning this study is that economic growth is not to be equated with social progress or human development, the latter encompassing a far more profound spiritual dimension, which takes far more delicate efforts to accomplish.

Brightly coloured prints, portraying model behaviour or a better future, have been a ubiquitous element of Chinese political culture from Imperial times until present. As economic reform swept the People's Republic in the 1980s, visual propaganda ceased to depict the tanned and muscular labourers in a proletarian utopia, so typical of preceding decades. Instead, Western icons of progress and development were employed: high-speed bullet trains, spacecraft, high-rise buildings, gridlocked free-ways and projections of general affluence. Socialist Realism was phased out by design and mixed- media techniques that were influenced by Western advertising. This lavishly illustrated study traces the development of the style and content of the Chinese propaganda poster in the decade of reform, from its traditional origins to its use as a tool for political and economic purposes.

The Performing Arts In Contemporary China written by Colin Mackerras and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-17 with Social Science categories.
The overthrow of the ‘gang of four’ in 1976 had profound effects in all areas of Chinese society, and probably nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in the performing arts. Jiang Qing, Mao Zedong’s widow, was strongly interested in the performing arts and exercised great influence over them. Professor Mackerras describes this influence and the effects its removal had on the arts in the years after Mao’s death, as well as in the years following the Cultural Revolution. This book, first published in 1981, deals not only with opera, the spoken play, music and dance but also with cinema, describing how in all these cases the Chinese have adapted traditional art forms for political, social and propagandist purposes, both domestic and international. It charts the transformations that have taken place in all the multiple aspects of the performing arts and sets them against the development of Chinese society as a whole. It also looks at the role of the actor and performer in society, including their training, social status and livelihood.
