Mass communication has long been recognized as an important contributor to national identity and nation building. This book examines the relationship between media and nationalism in Israel, arguing that, in comparison to other countries, the Israeli case is unique. It explores the roots and evolution of newspapers, journalism, radio, television, and the debut of the Internet on both the cultural and the institutional levels, and examines milestones in the socio-political development of Hebrew and Israeli mass communication. In evaluating the technological changes in the media, the book shows how such shifts contribute to segmentation and fragmentation in the age of globalization.

Dan Caspi offers a comprehensive introduction to the Israeli mass media and a fresh theoretical look at the role and function of a free press in a democratic society. Two major issues underlie this study, patterned after the pioneering work of Morris Janowitz on the community press in the United States: relations between social and communications systems and reciprocal relations among various mass media. Caspi's primary concern is to determine whether the recent flourishing of a local press, in the form of weekly tabloids sold or distributed free throughout their respective cities, reflects and in turn contributes to a process of social and political decentralization. The Israeli audience thirsts for information. The nationwide mass media, developed in the shadow of a centralist political system, is rigid and inflexible, downplaying the news value of local events and attending only to Israel's acutely felt security and economic problems. Hence, there is "a "burgeoning of over a hundred local newspapers to fill the need for a more intimate press. Contents: "Media Decentralization in a Centralized System: Some General Trends and a Communication Model"; "The Daily Press in Israel"; "The Development of the Local Press"; "Institutional Characteristics"; "Personnel Characteristics"; "Functional Characteristics"; "The Struggle between the Local and Nationwide Press"; "The Inception of the Local Press in Four Major Cities: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Beersheba"; "Public Support"; "Political Approaches."

Communal Webs written by Tamar Katriel and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with History categories.

This book brings together insights derived from a detailed exploration of Israeli cultural patterns of communication, highlighting their role in the processes of culture formation, maintenance, and change. Katriel's ethnographic examples provide a richly-textured account of Israeli cultural experience, illustrating the potential of a cultural analysis grounded in the study of ideologically-informed communicative practices. The author addresses central issues in contemporary anthropology and human communication studies such as the identification of cultural communication patterns in ethnographic research, conceptualizations of the notions of culture and community, the rhetorical force of cultural communication forms, the role of ritualization in communication and social processes, the critical potential of ethnographic work, and the ethnographer's stance in studying one's own culture.

Steering The Polity written by Itzhak Galnoor and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with categories.

Examines a political system as a network of communication. This analysis includes, but does not limit itself to, the relationship between political institutions and the mass media. Rather, it takes into account how all channels of information to and from centres of power work, how that information flows, and the impact that it has. Galnoor regards the process of decision-making in society as being essentially a problem for communication studies. Israel is used as a case study. The book begins with a proposal for a theory of political communication, drawing on the ideas of Karl Deutsch. A brief overview of Israeli society and politics follows. The following six chapters appply this theoretical framework to Israel's political development. Galnoor makes a distinction between political development per se, and democratic development, which he believes can be distinguished through an analysis of selected political variables in communication terms. Israel's democratic development is the subject of the next two chapters. Galnoor regards the process of decision-making in society as being essentially a problem from communication studies. His synthesis of politics and communication may be the basis for truly comparative studies of how decisions to use power are made.
