"This study examines traditional Chinese education and its influence on second language (L2) teaching and learning. Since English instruction in Taiwan focuses on grammatical competence, Chinese learners (L2), therefore, have less possibility of gaining communicative and cultural competence. This study, thus, recommends an innovative TESOL method---Communicative Language Teaching (CLT} including its history, theory, advantages, limitations and socio-cultural considerations. Ten Taiwanese students studying in the Unites States were interviewed, and they stated a clear preference for CLT, especially for Taiwanese planning to study abroad. An adapted speaking unit is also provided for functional use in Taiwan. The researcher also identifies obstacles to CLT use in a traditional setting and suggests ways to combine the traditional method with CLT in Taiwan. A literature-based CLT curriculum for the book Children of the River (Crew, 1989) is included"--Document.

This book describes a study which examines perceptions of both students and teachers in Taiwan about secondary schools and different types of cram school. The reality for many Taiwanese students is that they experience, often for many years, a mixture of regular secondary and cram school input. Cram schools are known to vary widely in teaching style, but systematic studies on this type of school are rare. The present study looks "below the surface" of ELT in cram school and regular secondary level classes in Taiwan, in the wake of the recent educational reforms that have been introduced by the Taiwan authorities. The study focuses in particular on the changes in secondary English teaching, the implementation of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), as well as teachers' understanding and describes and seeks to account for a reluctance to depart from traditional language teaching methods that have, elsewhere, been largely discredited.

"English Learning and Teaching in Taiwan: Theory and Practice of Communicative Language Teaching" examined the extent to which the communicative approach is implemented in the English classroom in senior high school in Taiwan. It also investigated senior high school students' attitudes towards English learning at school. This book employed a combination of a dominant quantitative approach and a less-dominant qualitative data aggregation procedure. Data were collected through focus group interviews, classroom observations, and questionnaire. The findings reveal that the traditional approach, which focuses on the teaching of vocabulary, grammar and the explanation of the textbook contents, still prevails in the English classroom. Teachers' classroom practices reflect students' current learning purpose of achieving good exam results. Despite their short-term need of passing exams, the majority of students hold positive attitudes towards more communicative-based language teaching or activities in class. Accordingly, English teaching in school needs to help achieve students' long-term goal, which is to develop the ability to use English in the real situation outside of the classroom.
