In Communities and Networks, Katherine Giuffre takes the science of social network analysis and applies it to key issues of living in communities, especially in urban areas, exploring questions such as: How do communities shape our lives and identities? How do they foster either conformity or innovation? What holds communities together and what happens when they fragment or fall apart? How is community life changing in response to technological advances? Refreshingly accessible and built on fascinating case examples, this unique book provides not only the theoretical grounding necessary to understand how and why the burgeoning area of social network analysis can be useful in studying communities, but also clear technical explanations of the tools of network analysis and how to gather and analyze real-world network data. Network analysis allows us to see community life in a new perspective, with sometimes surprising results and insights, and this book enables readers to gain a deeper understanding of social life and the relationships that build (and break) communities. This engaging text will be an exciting new resource for upper-level undergraduate and beginning graduate students in a wide range of courses including social network analysis, community studies, urban studies, organizational studies, and quantitative methods.

The primary goal of the Communication and Technology volume (5th within the series "Handbooks of Communication Science") is to provide the reader with a comprehensive compilation of key scholarly literature, identifying theoretical issues, emerging concepts, current research, specialized methods, and directions for future investigations. The internet and web have become the backbone of many new communication technologies, often transforming older communication media, through digitization, to make them compatible with the net. Accordingly, this volume focuses on internet/web technologies. The essays cover various infrastructure technologies, ranging from different kinds of hard-wired elements to a range of wireless technologies such as WiFi, mobile telephony, and satellite technologies. Audio/visual communication is discussed with reference to large-format motion pictures, medium-sized television and video formats, and the small-screen mobile smartphone. There is also coverage of audio-only media, such as radio, music, and voice telephony; text media, in such venues as online newspapers, blogs, discussion forums and mobile texting; and multi-media technologies, such as games and virtual reality.

Social and Economic Effects of Community Wireless Networks and Infrastructures highlights the successes of community wireless networks but also boldly addresses the potential risk factors and broader socioeconomic concerns. This publication’s exploration of previous successes and failures, various designs, and potential challenges with CWNs makes it a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, vendors, and activists.

Communities Networks And Ethnic Politics written by Ken Hahlo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-10 with Political Science categories.

First Published in 1998, this study explores ethnic community political participation in local politics in the North West British town. The analysis is located within the framework of the shift from Fordism to post-Fordism.From 1965 to 1980 ethnic communities increased their access to scarce resources including political influence by engaging in ethnic politics. Using membership of religious organisations as structures of support, elected men deployed ethnic identities to compete with others for ethnic support and influence over local decision-making processes. This gave ethnic minorities a positive role in local politics. With the support of local community relations councils (CRCs), ethnic politics flourished. It gave ethnic communities real opportunities to participate as ethnic communities in politics. Using local events, ethnic leaders competed for political influence and ethnic support. After 1977 the shift from Fordism to post-Fordism brought about a decline in ethnic political participation. While conferment of citizenship secured their right to stay in Britain, the rise in consumerism undermined the manufacturing sector on which they depended for work. With no ethnic political identity, today, these communities are again politically disadvantaged.

Community Support Networks written by Liam Hall and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-22 with Social Science categories.

Community Support Networks highlights the crucial role community support networks play in maternal well-being and child development. Examining social networks through community studies and social support data, the book argues that strong local support systems are essential, challenging the emphasis on individual self-reliance. Without these networks, mothers can face increased stress and isolation, impacting the entire family. Think of it like a plant needing water and sunlight; families need community support to thrive. The book unfolds by exploring the historical context of community support and presenting case studies of diverse communities, revealing the effectiveness of different support forms. It delves into the implications of inadequate support, discussing challenges faced by mothers lacking strong networks. For example, communities with robust family services often see improved outcomes in early childhood education. Community Support Networks concludes with practical strategies for building and strengthening these vital networks, offering recommendations for policymakers and community leaders.
