With the surge of goods and resources between the two countries, large waves of Korean migrants have opened small ethnic firms in Beijing's Koreatown, turning a once barren wasteland into the largest Korean enclave in the world. The Cost of Belonging: An Ethnography of Solidarity and Mobility in Beijing's Koreatown fills a critical gap in East Asian and migration studies through an investigation of how the rise of transnationalism has impacted the social and economic lives of South Koreans searching for wealth and stability in China. Based off in-depth ethnographic fieldwork, this book studies the tensions, relationships, and perceptions in the ethnic enclave of Wangjing between Korean Chinese cultural brokers and South Koreans starting out as entrepreneurs. The author begins by defining community according to various theories and studies, then links the definitions to the concept of "sense of belonging". Community is one of the most important components of a broader society. As human beings advance and new civilizations emerge, the definition of community concept has also evolved. Traditionally, community was defined as a socially cohesive group of people who interacts with each other or organise themselves around shared values, goals or geographical area. However, in the contemporary world, the definition of community has surpassed physical boundaries and now encompasses the interrelationships of people across the world. Concept of community varies depending on many factors or circumstances within the contemporary world. For example, the concept of community has been community used to distinguish segregated groups of people from others, for example black minority community, Aboriginal communities, and homeless communities. From this perspective, members of a specific community may share elements such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic disadvantages. Consequently, community can be described as a sociological construct characterised by a specific manner of human behaviours, set of relationships and meanings and expectations from the members.

The increasing atomization of modern society has been accompanied by an enduring nostalgia for the idea of community as a source of security and belonging in an increasingly insecure world. Far from disappearing, community has been revived by transnationalism and by new kinds of individualism. Gerard Delanty begins this stimulating critical introduction to the concept with an analysis of the origins of the idea of community in Western utopian thought, and as a theme in classical sociology and anthropology. He goes on to chart the resurgence of the idea within communitarian thought and postmodern philosophies, the complications and critiques of multiculturalism, and new manifestations of community within a society where changing modes of communication produce both fragmentation and possibilities of new social bonds.
