In Migrant Organising: Community Unionism, Solidarity and Bricolage, Emma Martín-Díaz and Beltrán Roca explore recent developments in community unionism and solidarity networks among migrant workers in a post-Fordist context characterised by transnationalism and global chains. The labor movement sees coalitions as a key tool for union revitalization and social change, but there is little analysis of what makes them successful or the factors that make them fail. Amanda Tattersall—an organizer and labor scholar—addresses this gap in the first internationally comparative study of coalitions between unions and community organizations. She argues that coalition success must be measured by two criteria: whether campaigns produce social change and whether they sustain organizational strength over time. The book contributes new, practical frameworks and insights that will help guide union and community organizers across the globe. The book throws down the gauntlet to industrial relations scholars and labor organizers, making a compelling case for unions to build coalitions that wield "power with" community organizations. Tattersall presents three detailed case studies: the public education coalition in Sydney, the Ontario Health Coalition in Toronto, and the living wage campaign run by the Grassroots Collaborative in Chicago. Together they enable Tattersall to explore when and how coalition unionism is the best and most appropriate strategy for social change, organizational development, and union renewal. Power in Coalition presents clear lessons. She suggests that "less is more," because it is often easier to build stronger coalitions with fewer organizations making decisions and sharing resources. The role of the individual, she finds, is traditionally underestimated, even though a coalition's success depends on a leader's ability to broker relationships between organizations while developing the campaign's strategy. The crafting of goals that combine organizational interest and the public interest and take into account electoral politics are crucial elements of coalition success.

Trade union decline has been considerable over the past three decades but it undesirable and unwelcome given unions' roles in industrial relations, economics and civil society. Unions have engaged in a welter of responses to revitalise themselves. Yet decline continues and organising, the hitherto preeminent and preferred strategy to counter it, is not succeeding in achieving its aims, thus focus needs to be turned to other potential strategies. Despite an increasing literature on community unionism as a revitalisation strategy there is a dearth of UK examples of it being pursued and there is little empirical study of individual unions and whether and how community, consciously or not, features as part of their revitalisation strategies. This research seeks to partially address that gap; informed by a realist perspective and a critical stance, it uses a case study of a single, UK, public-sector trade union and poses the research question: to what extent is, or can be, community a (f)actor in trade union revitalisation? The research highlights continuing challenges for the case study union in its quest to revitalise both internally and externally. The union is unashamedly political, weaving its political priorities into its bargaining, organising and campaigning. The union sees the resultant mobilisation activity, coupled with good bread-and-butter services, as its best retention strategy. The research found that community could be an element in union revitalisation, and that community features in the case study union's revitalisation approach although there is no distinct community strategy. The union's dominant sectoral position, with its range of union-friendly arrangements, and its inherited substantial levels of density and organisation are not found everywhere. It is not, therefore, a transferable model although lessons, ideas and practices can and should be drawn upon where possible.

In Radical Unionism in the Midwest, 1900-1950 Rosemary Feurer examines the fierce battles between Midwestern electrical workers and bitterly anti-union electrical and metal industry companies during the 1930s and 40s. Organized as District 8 of the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers (UE) and led by open Communist William Sentner, workers developed a style of unionism designed to confront corporate power and to be a force for social transformation in their community and nation. Feurer studies District 8 through a long lens, establishing early twentieth century contexts for these conflicts. Exploring the role of radicals in local movement formation, Feurer argues for a "civic" unionism that could connect community and union concerns to build solidarity and contest the political economy. District 8's spirited unionism included plant occupations in St. Louis and Iowa, campaigns to democratize economic planning, and local strategies for national bargaining that were depicted as a Communist conspiracy by a corporate influenced Congressional committee in Evansville, Indiana. District 8 was destroyed through reactionary networks and the anti-Communist backlash of the mid-twentieth century, but Feurer argues that its history tells another side of the labor movement s formation in the 1930s and 40s, and can inform current struggles against corporate power in the modern global economy.
