Com base em experiência pessoal e profissional, com a contribuição de outros autores, pretendo apresentar a sabedoria como uma função executiva cerebral de desenvolvimento tardio que se manifesta no envelhecimento. Para chegar nesse ponto proponho discutir as origens da vida, seu valor e importância, que se manifesta e não pode ser explicada. No Livro Gênesis da Bíblia está relatada a história da criação, que é apresentada no Evangelho de João dizendo que "No princípio era o Verbo". A palavra e a linguagem podem decifrar não a origem da vida, mas sua manifestação. A partir desse conceito surge o conhecimento que pode se manifestar pela linguagem. A linguagem é dependente de inúmeras funções mentais e cerebrais. Dentre elas, as funções executivas representam funções mentais que se transformam em ações humanas. O conceito de função executiva é recente e mais conhecido nos estudos da infância. O processo de envelhecimento tradicionalmente é reconhecido como uma etapa da vida com perdas inexoráveis. Um levantamento histórico e demográfico coloca a velhice como o principal evento populacional da humanidade no século XXI. Estudando os conceitos de funções executivas é possível se identificar a sabedoria como tal. Os estudos mostram que as funções executivas amadurecem em fases diferentes da vida, sendo a sabedoria uma função dependente do tempo e se manifesta no envelhecimento como forma de adaptação do idoso em suas diversas dimensões. Como função executiva, a sabedoria pode, e deve, ser aprendida para que seja possível um envelhecimento saudável.
