Discover the latest developments in AR, VR, mobile, and wearable technologies for the remote guidance of physical tasks In Computer-Supported Collaboration: Theory and Practice, an expert team of researchers delivers the latest instruction in using augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mobile or wearable technology to support remote guidance on physical tasks. The authors offer an overview of the field before moving on to discuss state-of-the-art research developments in everything from shared visual spaces to the use of hand gestures and gaze information for better collaboration. The book also describes the hardware devices, software tools, and libraries that can be used to help build remote guidance systems, as well as the industrial systems and applications that have been used in real world settings. Finally, Computer-Supported Collaboration includes a discussion of the current challenges faced by practitioners in the field and likely future directions for new research and development. Readers will also discover: A thorough introduction and review of the art of remote guidance research and engineering Comprehensive explorations of the shared visual space used to support common grounding and the remote guidance of physical tasks, as well as mobility support for local workers Practical discussions of mobility support of workers and helpers in remote guidance, including systems that support hands-free interaction In-depth explorations of communication cues in remote guidance, including systems that support gesturing and sketching on a touch-based display Perfect for researchers and professionals working in human-computer interaction or computer-supported collaborative work, Computer-Supported Collaboration: Theory and Practice is also an ideal resource for educators and graduate students teaching or studying in these fields.

In 2015 and 2016 more than a million people sought refuge from conflict and hardships in Germany. While the response was ambivalent, across the country large networks of supporters formed, offering various kinds of assistance to the arriving persons. This book takes these developments as a starting point. It reports on an HCI project, building on the emancipatory traditions of Participatory Design and the Socio-Informatics approach, aiming to develop assistive technologies for forced migrants as well as their supporters. It focusses on the design process and reflects on the nature of intervening through participatory design in matters of migration and arrival. The work draws on feminist conceptualisations of care and outlines how care and participation interacted in this context to support the longterm maintenance of the design results, but also how care relations between the different participant groups undermined the democratic aims of participation. It draws out preliminary lessonsfor an interventionist HCI practice.

Best practices for addressing the bias and inequality that may result from the automated collection, analysis, and distribution of large datasets. Human-centered data science is a new interdisciplinary field that draws from human-computer interaction, social science, statistics, and computational techniques. This book, written by founders of the field, introduces best practices for addressing the bias and inequality that may result from the automated collection, analysis, and distribution of very large datasets. It offers a brief and accessible overview of many common statistical and algorithmic data science techniques, explains human-centered approaches to data science problems, and presents practical guidelines and real-world case studies to help readers apply these methods. The authors explain how data scientists’ choices are involved at every stage of the data science workflow—and show how a human-centered approach can enhance each one, by making the process more transparent, asking questions, and considering the social context of the data. They describe how tools from social science might be incorporated into data science practices, discuss different types of collaboration, and consider data storytelling through visualization. The book shows that data science practitioners can build rigorous and ethical algorithms and design projects that use cutting-edge computational tools and address social concerns.

Informed navigation of misinformation on social media constitutes a major challenge. The field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) suggests digital misinformation interventions as user-centered countermeasures. This book clusters (1) existing misinformation interventions within a taxonomy encompassing designs, interaction types, and timings. The book demonstrates that current research mostly addresses higher-educated participants, and targets Twitter/X and Facebook. It highlights trends toward comprehensible interventions in contrast to top-down approaches. The findings informed (2) the design, implementation, and evaluation of simulated apps for TikTok, voice messages, and Twitter/X as indicator-based interventions. Therefore, (3) the book identified misinformation indicators for various modalities that were perceived as comprehensible. The book empirically demonstrates that (4) indicator-based interventions are positively received due to their transparency. However, they also come with challenges, such as users' blind trust and lack of realistic assessments of biases. This research outlines chances and implications for future research.

Advances in network connectivity, power consumption, and physical size create new possibilities for using interactive computing outdoors. However, moving computing outdoors can drastically change the human outdoor experience. This impact is felt in many kinds of outdoor activities such as citizen science, personal recreation, search and rescue, informal education, and others. It is also felt across outdoor settings that range from remote wilderness to crowded cities. Understanding these effects can lead to ideas, designs and systems that improve, rather than diminish, outdoor experiences. This book represents the current results emerging from recent workshops focused on HCI outdoors and held in conjunction with CHI, GROUP, UbiComp, and MobileHCI conferences. Based on feedback at those workshops, and outreach to other leaders in the field, the chapters collected were crafted to highlight methods and approaches for understanding how technologies such as handhelds, wearables, and installed standalone devices impact individuals, groups, and even communities. These findings frame new ways of thinking about HCI outdoors, explore logistical issues associated with moving computing outdoors, and probe new experiences created by involving computing in outdoor pursuits. Also important are the ways that social media has influenced preparation, experience, and reflection related to outdoor experiences. HCI Outdoors: Theory, Design, Methods and Applications is of interest to HCI researchers, HCI practitioners, and outdoor enthusiasts who want to shape future understanding and current practice related to technology in every kind of outdoor experience.
