In 1832, facing white expansion, the Sauk warrior Black Hawk attempted to forge a pan-Indian alliance to preserve the homelands of the confederated Sauk and Fox tribes on the eastern bank of the Mississippi. Here, Patrick J. Jung re-examines the causes, course, and consequences of the ensuing war with the United States, a conflict that decimated Black Hawk's band. Correcting mistakes that plagued previous histories, and drawing on recent ethnohistorical interpretations, Jung shows that the outcome can be understood only by discussing the complexity of intertribal rivalry, military ineptitude, and racial dynamics.

One night in the city of Hearne, a young thief named Jute breaks into a wizard's house and steals an old wooden box. It should've been a straightforward job. Climb down the chimney, creep through the house, find the thing and get out fast. Unbeknownst to the boy, however, the box contains the knife that killed the Wind. Overcome with curiosity, Jute opens the box. It was the worst thing he could've done. Soon, he's on the run from the wizard, his old masters in the Thieves Guild, and their client, who happens to be the Lord of Darkness himself. On his odyssey of escape, Jute is aided by an unlikely assortment of friends, including a guilt-ridden assassin, a reluctant wizard, and a hawk who just might be able to teach him how to fly. But the Darkness will do anything to find Jute, even if it means plunging the whole land into war. The Hawk And His Boy is the first book of The Tormay Trilogy. The trilogy continues with The Shadow At The Gate, and concludes with The Wicked Day.

Pete Dunne S Essential Field Guide Companion written by Pete Dunne and has been published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-08 with Nature categories.

From the award-winning birder and author of Birds of Prey, an authoritative, information-packed guide to distinguishing North American birds. In this book, bursting with more information than any field guide could hold, the well-known author and birder Pete Dunne introduces readers to the “Cape May School of Birding.” It's an approach to identification that gives equal or more weight to a bird's structure and shape and the observer's overall impression (often called GISS, for General Impression of Size and Shape) than to specific field marks. After determining the most likely possibilities by considering such factors as habitat and season, the birder uses characteristics such as size, shape, color, behavior, flight pattern, and vocalizations to identify a bird. The book provides an arsenal of additional hints and helpful clues to guide a birder when, even after a review of a field guide, the identification still hangs in the balance. This supplement to field guides shares the knowledge and skills that expert birders bring to identification challenges. Birding should be an enjoyable pursuit for beginners and experts alike, and Pete Dunne combines a unique playfulness with the work of identification. Readers will delight in his nicknames for birds, from the Grinning Loon and Clearly the Bathtub Duck to Bronx Petrel and Chicken Garnished with a Slice of Mango and a Dollop of Raspberry Sherbet.

David Wells, 55, a lonely recent Lotto winner and widower on his way to Colorado, picks up hitchhiker Cheri North, 35, on a San Fernando Valley freeway on ramp. She's going to Denver to see an old friend, Jan. David is struck by her total resemblance to Marla (not his wife). Cheri always wanted to be a scenic photographer and asks to see some scenery along the way. He offers to show her Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and many other scenic places along the way at his expense. She enthusiastically accepts. At Zion, he presents her with a new camera, instructs her on its use, and helps her take pictures. They stop for the night at Bryce Canyon Lodge, where she tries to seduce him. He puts her off, admitting that he feels he's falling in love with her, but he wishes to develop a relationship before getting to sex. While enthralling Cheri with the beauty of Bryce Canyon, David continues to recall his times with Marla. He and Cheri become more intimate. Later that night, shivering from cold, she crawls into bed with him. Leaving Bryce, David takes Cheri on a trip through the wild lands of Utah, picking up pieces of petrified wood and having a picnic in remote Calf Creek Campground. Eerily, she picks out the same vantage points to take her pictures as did Marla years before. On a rock in a stream, David is unable to control himself and kisses Cheri with feeling. In Torrey, Utah, Cheri insists on sleeping in the same bed with David. She asks what the kiss in the stream means, David admits she reminds him of two other women, and he is uncertain if the love he feels is for Cheri or the other women. Her confusion and frustration increase. They go Country and Western dancing in Grand Junction. Another man dances with her while David rests. When the man tries to take her away from the dance hall, David intercedes. A knife fight follows with the man and two of his friends. Cheri becomes more insistant to know about the other women. In Estes Park she tells David of her love relationship with Jan. David takes her to her friend in Denver. Returning to Estes Park, David tries to sort out his feelings for Cheri. Later, returning to LA they stop for the night in Glenwood Springs. They are attacked by a vicious motorcycle gang of rapists and murderers. How do they defend themselves? Who are the two women in David's life? Can Cheri and David put their relationship together?
