Introducing Comparative Education aims to familiarize newcomers with comparative education as a field of study and to provide a continuing reference as people become more actively involved with comparative studies and the problems associated with developing them in rigorous and productive ways. The purposes and methods of comparative education are also discussed. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins by presenting a neat, simple, and generally accepted definition of comparative education. The reader is then introduced to the history and development of comparative education; the purposes of comparative education; some of the pitfalls in trying to compare education or educational systems across cultural and national boundaries; and some of the alternative methods open to those who would like to develop studies in comparative education. The approaches associated with Isaac Kandel, Nicholas Hans, and G. Z. F. Bereday, Brian Holmes, Edmund King, Harold Noah, and Max Eckstein are considered. The book concludes with a listing of resources for teaching and learning. This monograph is intended for students and educators.

The Making Of Citizens written by Robert Edward Hughes and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-15 with Education categories.

Excerpt from The Making of Citizens: A Study in Comparative Education During the last twenty years an enormous amount of material on the educational systems of Europe and America has been collected and published by various Governments, as well as by private persons. Hitherto, however, there has been no attempt made to collect and present this material in a systematic form to the English reader; although M. Levasseur has done this for the French, and several writers have performed a similar duty for the German, reader. The preparation of this work has proved a heavy task, and I trust that my effort will be received as an earnest attempt to place before my readers a complete and accurate account of the present position of education in the four principal countries of the world. There is one point I am anxious to make clear: I have placed as my aim, not the compilation of sets of comparable and scientifically accurate statistics, for I recognise the futility, and, indeed, impossibility of such a task as that. My purpose has been rather to utilise statistics as a means to an end - and that end is the presentation of a reasonably clear and well-defined set of pictures illustrating the systems of education at work in these countries. Statistics are used as guides, not gauges. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In an attempt to locate studies from various cultures and nations that would provide useful sources for university courses in comparative reading, this booklet provides annotated sources of international reading studies, as well as three articles on comparative reading. Following an introduction, the first part of the booklet begins with an article on the value of comparative reading. This is followed by the bibliography, which is divided into sections on (1) methodology of comparative education and comparative reading, (2) studies and descriptive reports, and (3) reviews and descriptions of the state of the art regarding research and/or the teaching of reading. The second part of the booklet contains two viewpoints on university courses in comparative reading, including an example of a cross-national study on primary reading. (HTH)
