We model a symmetric duopoly where firms choose whether to be quantity setters or price setters by deciding the optimal capacity; undertake R & D activity to determine the degree of differentiation; and finally compete in the market. Two games are proposed, where investment decisions follow different sequences. We assess price and quantity decisions, finding a set of equilibria where the choice of the market variable is affected by both technological commitments. As a result, the acquired wisdom that quantity setting is a dominant strategy for firms, while price setting is a dominant strategy from a social standpoint, may not be confirmed.

This note analyses the adoption and diffusion of innovations in a horizontally differentiated Cournot duopoly in which firms have to choose the dates for adopting a cost-reducing new technology like in Reinganum (1981a). We prove that product differentiation crucially matters in the diffusion pattern of the innovation and in the comparison between the adoption timing in the decentralized economy Vs the social optimum.

This paper presents an examination of whether an antitrust authority should prohibit a quantity-setting duopolists' semi-collusive production cartel after noncooperative quality-improving R&D. Results show that values of the technological spillover and product differentiation parameters exist such that both consumers and firms prefer a semi-collusive production cartel to full competition. It is particularly interesting that, in stark contrast to results of previous works, even though there exist circumstances under which the output level under semi-collusive production cartel is strictly greater than that under full competition, the market price under semi-collusive production cartel is invariably higher than under the case of full competition. Furthermore, a surprising key result is that if the degree of product differentiation is fairly small, and if technological spillover effects are fairly large, then a semi-collusive production cartel has social superiority compared to the case of full competition.

We examine the relationship between the equilibrium price and the degree of product differentiation in a mixed duopoly in which a welfare-maximizing public enterprise competes against a profit-maximizing private firm. Existing works on private economy show that increased product differentiation mitigates price competition. We find that, in a mixed economy, increased product differentiation can accelerate competition when the demand is elastic. The private firm chooses to locate itself too close to the public firm (and thus makes the resulting degree of product differentiation too low) for social welfare, which never appears in the private economy.

The paper examines the effects of the degree of competition on the firms' decision to innovate in differentiated markets. We find that a low (high) degree of product differentiation (competition) weakly supports the introduction of new products. Firms' weakly favour a process innovation if the degree of product differentiation (competition) is high (low). In addition, assumptions on the strategic complementarity of product and process innovations and on the decreasing returns of a product innovation are found to be the critical assumptions in the sense of Milgrom and Roberts (1994).
