Sleep disorders encompass a range of conditions that can significantly impact overall health, safety, and quality of life. Symptoms of sleep disorders include excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or movements during sleep, disrupted sleep, and difficulty falling asleep. If these conditions are not promptly and effectively treated, patients often experience various physical and mental complications, such as psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, leading to a decreased overall quality of life. Complementary and alternative therapy (CAT) presents a potential approach for the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders. It encompasses a range of management practices, including cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise, mindfulness, meditation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, yoga, herbal medicine, acupuncture, acupressure, Gua Sha, moxibustion, Qigong, Tai Chi, acupoint catgut embedding, acupotomy, nutritional supplements, and vitamin supplements. However, the adoption of CAT for sleep disorders in clinical practice faces numerous challenges due to a limited understanding of their mechanisms and clinical effects.

Written by over seventy scientists and clinicians worldwide from China, USA, Germany, Canada, Japan and other countries, this monograph, with nearly 450 figures and tables, covers a wide range of advanced progress in acupuncture research, from experimental research to clinical applications. In addition to exploring the histopathological basis for acupuncture and mathematical simulation of acupoint response to stimulation, initiation and transduction of acupuncture signals and cellular mechanisms during acupuncture effects as well as chemical and physical characteristics of moxibustion on acupoints are broadly discussed. The topics also include novel data on acupuncture effect with advanced imaging techniques, a unique understanding of meridian-viscera correlation, specific interactions between meridians and neurosensory organs within the system of homeostatic regulation and the acupuncture-induced influences on autonomic function. Several chapters introduce specific approaches with dry needling, silver needling and stainless needling for certain diseases, such as myofascitis, supportive care for breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy as well as perioperative care of surgical patients. Moreover, this book discusses recent research on acupuncture therapy and potential mechanisms for a number of severe and refractory neurological disorders, including hyperactivity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, orofacial pain, chronic pain, itch, multiple sclerosis, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, depressive disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and ischemic brain injury. The vast amount of information offered in this book provides a comprehensive perspective on advanced acupuncture research to not only acupuncturists, but also to neuroscientists, neurologists, and other clinicians. Integrative Therapies in Lung Health and Sleep provides an overview of integrative therapies to assist clinicians caring for patients with acute or chronic lung diseases and sleep disorders--emphasizing the scientific bases for these therapies; and their implementation into clinical practice. This volume focuses on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments, modalities, and practices that are integrated with conventional medical treatment and for which there is some evidence of safety and efficacy. Whole Medical Systems, with a specific focus on Traditional Chinese Medicine , are also addressed. Individual chapters are devoted to specific health conditions or illnesses, addressing the current state of the science in the four organizing CAM domains, including available information regarding benefits, risks, or safety considerations. Unique aspects of this volume are the chapters related to evaluation of the evidence base for integrative therapies; new animal model research with herbal preparations focused on the serious problem of sepsis in the ICU; guidance for counseling patients with chronic lung illnesses who may be desperate for a cure; and palliative and end-of-life care for patients with chronic lung conditions. Clinicians in various health care settings will find Integrative Therapies in Lung Health and Sleep beneficial in their practice, particularly as the use of integrative therapies becomes more widespread.

Expert contributors bridge gaps between the evidence base and best practices for treating clients with ID across disciplines and discuss improved policy for maximum utility. Key areas of coverage include: Core etiological approaches in psychopathology and ID, including neuroimaging, behavioral phenotypes and genetic syndromes, psychological and social factors, and epilepsy. Comorbid psychopathologies (e.g., mood, anxiety, bipolar and personality disorders). Common clinical conditions (e.g., ADHD, autism, and behavior problems). Medical and psychological interventions (e.g., psychopharmacology) as well as community and inpatient services. The Handbook of Psychopathology in Intellectual Disability, Second Edition, is an essential reference for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians, therapists, and other scientist-practitioners in developmental, school, and clinical child psychology, psychiatry, social work, rehabilitation medicine, public health, neuropsychology, and all related disciplines.

The third edition of Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient brings a classic reference text into the twenty-first century. It combines critical scholarship with the voice of expert clinicians who work at the interface of psychiatry with medical specialties. It is meant to be read for pleasure as well as consulted as a reference. The editors have worked with the authors to bring a consistent perspective to the book - one that sees the medical psychiatrist as an agent for bringing a more comprehensive perspective to medical care. Even seasoned and knowledgeable practitioners will find much that is new to them in this book. The volume covers topics in depth that other books in the field may not cover at all, such as the use of herbal and nutritional therapies for medical-psychiatric symptoms and syndromes, and the choice of questionnaires to supplement history-taking. It looks at old topics in a new way: The chapter on the physical examination applies psychometric considerations to the Babinski sign, describes the method and application of quantitative bedside olfactory testing, and discusses smartphone apps to improve the sensitivity of the examination. Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient, 3rd Edition provides concepts and information to facilitate the dialogue between psychiatrists and general medical specialists - minimizing psychiatric jargon and speaking in the common language of caring and curious physicians.

In partnership with the Jacques Monod Conference “Genetics, environment, signaling & synaptic plasticity in developmental brain disorders: from bench to bedside", the Frontiers in Neuroscience Journal announces an article collection that will highlight cutting-edge research presented at the 2022 meeting from Monday 11th Apr - Friday 15th Apr in Roscoff (Brittany). Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) are a highly heterogeneous group of disorders with a prevalence of 3% of the worldwide population. These disorders include Intellectual Disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, specific learning disorder, motor and language disorder, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Thus, NDDs are characterized by deficits in cognition, social interaction, behavior, and motor functioning as a result of abnormal brain development. Several of these phenotypes can co-exist in the same patient. Indeed, for instance, up to 50% of ASD patients display also ID. Similarly, the prevalence of epilepsy in ID patients is around 26%. This phenotypic overlap is also mirrored at the genetic and molecular levels. For instance, some pathways (e.g., Rho-GTPase, group I mGluRs, cAMP and WNT) have been found to be altered in different forms of NDDs, both of genetic and environmental origin.
