The son of a preacher, Blackwood had a life-long interest in the supernatural, the occult, and spiritualism, and firmly believed that humans possess latent psychic powers. Lovecraft wrote about Blackwood: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." His powerful story "The Willows," which effectively describes another dimension impinging upon our own, was reckoned by Lovecraft to be not only "foremost of all" Blackwood's tales but the best "weird tale" of all time. Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Man Whom the Trees Loved by Algernon Blackwood The Man Whom the Trees Loved is a weird tale. It's concerned with Sophia and David Bittacy living in a house on the edge of a great forest, in which David develops a deep interest. The story is observed mainly from the perspective of Sophia, who at first doesn't understand her husband's interest in the trees but soon comes to fear them - as there is something in the forest which makes it irresistible to her husband - a force which is not necessarily evil, but simply outside human comprehension.Algernon Henry Blackwood (1869-1951) was an English writer of tales of the supernatural. In his late thirties, Blackwood started to write horror stories. He was very successful, writing ten books of short stories and appearing on both radio and television to tell them. He also wrote fourteen novels and a number of plays, most of which were produced but not published. He was an avid lover of nature, and many of his stories reflect this. Although Blackwood wrote a number of horror stories, his most typical work seeks less to frighten than to induce a sense of awe. Good examples are the novels The Centaur (1911), which climaxes with a traveller's sight of a herd of the mythical creatures; and Julius LeVallon (1916) and its sequel The Bright Messenger (1921), which deal with reincarnation and the possibility of a new, mystical evolution in human consciousness. His best stories, such as those collected in the book Incredible Adventures (1914), are masterpieces of atmosphere, construction and suggestion.

That's certainly the case in Algernon Blackwood's The Garden of Survival, in which two twin brothers' adventures take them to opposite ends of the earth - though their special bond remains intact. The Garden of Survival begins in Blackwood's usual polished and expressive style. His protagonist, Richard, a former military man now making a living as a foreign diplomat in Africa, details in epistolary format his musings of life and love. The story is both enticing and ethereal. The description of Richard's childhood garden is vaguely reminiscent of the biblical Garden of Eden. How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Willows by Algernon Blackwood The Willows is a novella by English author Algernon Blackwood. It is one of Blackwood's best known works and has been influential on a number of later writers. Horror author H.P. Lovecraft considered it to be the finest supernatural tale in English literature. "The Willows" is an example of early modern horror and is connected within the literary tradition of weird fiction. Two friends are midway on a canoe trip down the Danube River. Throughout the story Blackwood personifies the surrounding environment--river, sun, wind--and imbues them with a powerful and ultimately threatening character. Most ominous are the masses of dense, desultory, menacing willows, which "moved of their own will as though alive, and they touched, by some incalculable method, my own keen sense of the horrible." Just after managing to land their canoe for the evening on the shifting, sandy islands just downstream across the Austria/Hungary frontier, the main character reflects on the river's potency, human qualities and will: Sleepy at first, but later developing violent desires as it became conscious of its deep soul, it rolled, like some huge fluid being, through all the countries we had passed, holding our little craft on its mighty shoulders, playing roughly with us sometimes, yet always friendly and well-meaning, till at length we had come inevitably to regard it as a Great Personage.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated The Damned by Algernon Blackwood The Damned by Algernon Blackwood is a great haunted house story along the lines of Turn of the Screw and the Haunting of Hill House. A brother and sister spend some time with a recently widowed friend. Her deceased husband was a strict fire and brimstone preacher who damned everyone who didn't believe like him to hell. His less strong-willed wife fell under his spell, but now the house seems to be haunted by...a shadow? Goblins? Ghostly pagans? Or many different things at once. This is a suspenseful, gripping tale about the tyranny of closed mindedness disguised as a horror novel.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood The Wendigo is a novella by Algernon Blackwood, first published in The Lost Valley and Other Stories. Plot Summary: In the wilderness north of Rat Portage in Northwestern Ontario, two Scotsmen - divinity student Simpson and his uncle, Dr. Cathcart, an author of a book on collective hallucination - are on a moose-hunting trip with guides Hank Davis and the wilderness-loving French "Canuck", Joseph Dfago. While their Indian cook, Punk, stays to tend the main camp, the others split up into two hunting-parties; Dr. Cathcart goes with Hank, while Dfago guides Simpson in a canoe down the river to explore the vast territory beyond. Simpson and Dfago make camp, and it soon becomes clear that Dfago senses - or thinks he senses - some strange and fearful odour on the wind. That night, Simpson wakes to find Dfago cowering in terror from something outside the tent. Later Dfago runs off into the night, forcing Simpson to go and look for him. He follows his footprints in the snow for many miles, realising that Dfago's are not the only set of tracks. The larger set of footprints are not human, and gradually it seems that Dfago's own tracks have metamorphosed into smaller versions of the larger set. Eventually, both sets of tracks vanish, and Simpson thinks he hears Dfago's distant voice calling out from somewhere in the sky above. Simpson finally manages to make his way back to the main camp where he is reunited with the others. Dr. Cathcart and Hank go back with him to search for Dfago, and when camping once more out in the wilderness, Dfago - or some hideous parody of Dfago - appears before them before vanishing once again into the night.
