Over the past fifteen years, descriptions of Australian Aboriginal languages have provided important data for the typological study of morpho-syntactic phenomena. The present volume presents descriptions of complex sentence phenomena in ten Australian languages and provides important new material in this area of current concern in linguistics. Complex sentences are described either from a syntactic or from a semantic (discourse-functional) point of view. The papers draw on data from widely distributed and, in some instances, previously undescribed languages. Among others descriptions of the (so-far) poorly known non-Pama-Nyungan languages of northern Australia, as well as Pama-Nyungan languages central and northern Australia are included in this volume.

Morphology And Sentence Construction In Kurrama written by Peter Mervyn Hill and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Aboriginal Australians categories.

[Truncated abstract] This thesis addresses the nature of simple and complex sentence constructions in Kurrama, an Australian Aboriginal language spoken in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Kurrama has only a few remaining older speakers. The data on which this research is based consists of materials recorded by Alan Dench, in the 1980 s and 1990's, with two Kurrama speakers U+00fdAlgy Paterson and U+00fdJudy July plus material collected by the author, in 2007, with the assistance of Maudie Dowton and Thomas Cox. Little research has been done previously on the Kurrama variety. O Grady (1966) classified Kurrama as a member of the Ngayarda subgroup of Pama-Nyungan, placing it in a dialect relationship with Yindjibarndi. Dench (2009: 261-262) avoids a genetic classification and has instead identified three typologically distinct (and) geographically delimited groups of languages in the Pilbara region: the Northern Pilbara languages, the Central Pilbara languages and the Southern Pilbara languages. Kurrama is placed in the Central Pilbara group and like other languages of this group features a consistent pattern of nominative-accusative case alignment and an active-passive voice contrast in transitive and ditransitive clauses. As part of the investigation in this study comparisons are made between the Kurrama and Yindjibarndi dialects. However, the focus of this thesis is on Kurrama sentence construction. The thesis addresses the following related research questions: 1. What are the differing types of simple and complex sentences used in Kurrama? 2. How are these simple and complex sentences constructed? 3. What are the salient characteristics of these sentences? Chapters 2 to 5 focus on Kurrama morphology and identify the forms and functions of the parts of speech that make up Kurrama sentences. Chapters 6 and 7 specifically address the characteristics of Kurrama simple and complex sentences respectively. Chapter 8 examines the various grammatical means by which clauses are linked to one another in Kurrama, following the pattern of the papers collected in Dixon and Aikhenvald (2009). Chapters 1 and 9 respectively introduce and conclude the discussion in this thesis. Chapter 1 reviews previous research carried out on Kurrama, presents a brief overview of Kurrama phonology, and introduces some preliminaries to the chapters that follow. Chapter 9 evaluates the project and assesses its success in answering the research questions...

This study covers a number of topics that are prominent in the grammars of Australian Aboriginal languages, especially ergativity and manifestations of the hierarchy that runs from the speech-act participants down to inanimates. This hierarchy shows up in case marking, number marking and agreement, advancement and cross-referencing. Chapter 1 provides an overall picture of Australian languages. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 deal with case systems, including voice alternations and other advancements. Chapter 5 deals with the distribution of case marking within the noun phrase. Chapter 6 deals with systems that allow the cross-referencing of bound pronouns. Chapter 7 deals with clauses which appear to have more than one verb. Chapter 8 deals with compound and complex sentences. Chapter 9 deals with word order, and emphasises a theme introduced in Chapter 5, namely the widespread use of discontinuous phrases. Chapter 10 draws together ergativity and various manifestations of the hierarchy, and attempts to interpret their distribution. The final section provides an interesting hypothesis about the evolution of core grammar in Australia.

This is a comprehensive linguistic description of Kunbarlang (Gunbalang), a highly endangered polysynthetic language of northern Australia. Kunbarlang belongs to the non-Pama-Nyungan Gunwinyguan language family and is currently spoken by nearly 40 people. This work draws on elicitations and analysis of narratives from the author's original field work (2015--2018), as well as those from previous recordings. The main areas covered are the sound system, morphology, syntax, and aspects of lexical and constructional semantics. Dictated by the polysynthetic structure of the language and the patterns of its use, the principal focus of the work is the analysis of the verbal complex and the interaction between the verb and other constituents of the clause. The analysis strike a balance between taking into consideration the areal and genetic context, being informed by linguistic typology and theory, yet at the same time remaining data-driven and theory-neutral in the way generalisations are stated. Against the Australian and a broader cross-linguistic background, Kunbarlang possesses remarkable features at all levels of its organisation.

Verb Classification In Australian Languages written by William B. McGregor and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-10 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book deals with systems of verb classification in Australian Aboriginal languages, with particular focus on languages of the north-west. It proposes a typology of the systems according to their main formal and semantic characteristics. It also makes some proposals concerning the historical origins and grammaticisation of these systems, and suggestions regarding the grammatical relations involved. In addition, an attempt is made to situate the phenomenon of verb classification within the context of related verbal phenomena such as serial verb constructions, nominal incorporation, and complex predicates.
