Human organisms adapted to plant-based diets in hunter-gatherers times. Statistical studies show that people consuming plant products on a regular basis have lower risks of developing cancer and neurodegenerative diseases than people preferably eating starch and fat. The beneficial effects of plants are primarily associated with flavonoids, molecules present in fruits, vegetables, teas, and herbs, also known in traditional medicine for their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Flavonoids are able to bind metals and form complexes. The present book summarizes the scientific evidence collected over the past decade on the structure, chemistry, and biological function of the complexes of natural flavonoids with nine essential metals representing d-block elements of the periodic table. The role of each individual metal in the human body and the diseases affected by metal-flavonoid complexes are described. The materials collected in the book will be of interest to chemists, biologists, nutritionists, and medicinal scientists.

Volume 18, entitled Metallo-Drugs: Development and Action of Anticancer Agents of the series Metal Ions in Life Sciences centers on biological, medicinal inorganic chemistry. The serendipitous discovery of the antitumor activity of cis-diamminodichloroplatinum(II) (cisplatin) by Barnett Rosenberg in the 1960s is a landmark in metallodrug-based chemotherapy. The success of cisplatin in the clinic, followed by oxaliplatin and carboplatin, along with their drawbacks relating mainly to resistance development and severe toxicity, initiated research on polynuclear platinum complexes and on Pt(IV) complexes as prodrugs. Furthermore, the indicated shortcomings led to the exploration of other transition and main group metal ions, among them Ru(II/III), Au(I/III), Ti(IV), V(IV/V), and Ga(III) including also the essential metal ions Fe(II/III), Cu(I/II), and Zn(II). Ionic as well as covalent and non-covalent interactions between structurally very different complexes and biomolecules like nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates are studied and discussed with regard to their possible anticancer actions. Hence, MILS-18 summarizes the research at the forefront of medicinal inorganic chemistry, including studies on the next-generation, tailor-made anticancer drugs. All this and more is treated in an authoritative and timely manner in the 17 stimulating chapters of this book, written by 39 internationally recognized experts from 10 nations (from the US via Europe to China and Australia). The impact of this vibrant research area is manifested by more than 2700 references, nearly 150 illustrations (more than half in color) and several comprehensive tables. Metallo-Drugs: Development and Action of Anticancer Agents is an essential resource for scientists working in the wide range from enzymology, material sciences, analytical, organic, and inorganic biochemistry all the way through to medicine including the clinic ... not forgetting that it also provides excellent information for teaching.

Kaempferol is a flavonol that is relatively abundant in various plants and some edible berries. These compounds have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, lipolytic and anti-cancer effects. In this book, the authors discuss the chemistry, natural occurrences and health benefits of kaempferol. Topics include the effect of cyclodextrins complexation on the properties of kaempferol; kaempferitrin and kaempferol as nutraceutical compounds contributing to glucose homeostasis by acting at multiple biological sites; distribution of kaempferol glycosides and their function in plants; analytical approaches for kaempferol determination; chemoprotective effects of kaempferol in colorectal tumorigenesis; multipotent flavonoid kaempferol as molecular targets and mechanism of action in nanotechnology applications in cancer and human health; metal complexes of kaempferol and their speciation in human plasma; the action of kaempferol on oral cavity cancer and airway secretion; kaempferol as it regulates intestinal tight junction permeability; and identification of kaempferol in historical textiles.

Flavonoids are abundant secondary metabolites found in plants and fungi that have various roles in these organisms, including pigmentation, cell signalling, plant defence and inter-organism communication. Due to their abundance in nature, flavonoids are also important components of the human diet, and the last four decades have seen an intense study focused on the structure characterization of flavonoids and on their roles in mammal metabolism. This book reviews most of the well-established activities of flavonoids, and we also present more recent research studies on the area of flavonoids, including the chemical aspects of structure characterization of flavonoids, the biosynthesis of flavonoids in model plants as well as their role in abiotic stress situations and in agriculture, the role of flavonoids in metabolism and health and their importance in foods, from consumption to their use as bioactive components.
