"Composing Myself is a heartwarming story of forgiving the people you love, and finding the strength to stand up and be proud of where you came from. I laughed, I cried, and I had a smile on my face when I turned the last page." ~ Tracey Garvis Graves, author of the New York Times bestseller On the Island The worst kind of lie is the one you tell yourself. Whitney Monroe it's always been easier to lie about who her mother really was than face the shame and judgement that would surely follow the truth. Raised by her grandmother, Whitney had always managed to keep her two worlds separate, even if it meant lying to everyone—especially herself. But those lies suddenly become much harder to keep when Reid Phillips, a struggling musician and her not-entirely-welcome new roommate complicates things by seeing right through her carefully constructed walls and challenging her compartmentalized life. Now with Grams seriously ill, her mother’s life in turmoil and her dream job and relationship on the line, it’s more important than ever for Whitney to hold everything together. But when that means being honest with everyone—starting with herself, is Whitney strong enough to do what it takes?

There has been a flurry of writing about teachers as inquirers and researchers as well as books about children as inquirers. This volume brings these two areas together -- teachers and students are inquiring at Ridgeway Elementary School. It demonstrates the importance of thought collectives as forums for student and teacher learning. The children in the primary classrooms in this book are working to understand the world around them and their place in it as literate individuals. Their teachers are studying themselves and the students. No other book describes the way this work affects children, teachers, and the ethos of the school in which the work occurs. In that sense, this book is groundbreaking in that it is an honest portrayal of the joys and sorrows, the successes and the stumbling blocks, the clear vision, and the obfuscating that teachers live as they enact a life of asking questions, being curious, wandering, and wondering. Acknowledging and honoring the many faces of inquiry in schools, this book demonstrates the children's inquiry, their teachers' inquiry, and the place of that inquiry in schools. It lays out the ways in which inquiry is fundamental to teaching and learning in a democracy in which all of the members of the community have a voice in deciding curricular directions and ways of presenting learning. Teachers are presented as thinkers and learners, not merely as technicians enacting others' views of what is to be learned and when. Readers will find teachers dealing with the real issues of life in schools; they will see how teachers can use their existing situations as points of departure for their growth and their students' learning.

Composing The Party Line written by David G. Tompkins and has been published by Purdue University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-15 with History categories.

This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin's death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid-to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions and demands. Based on a deep analysis of the archival and contemporary published sources on state, party, and professional organizations concerned with musical life, Tompkins argues that music, as a significant part of cultural production in these countries, played a key role in instituting and maintaining the regimes of East Central Europe. As part of the Stalinist project to create and control a new socialist identity at the personal as well as collective level, the ruling parties in East Germany and Poland sought to saturate public space through the production of music. Politically effective ideas and symbols were introduced that furthered their attempts to, in the parlance of the day, "engineer the human soul." Music also helped the Communist parties establish legitimacy. Extensive state support for musical life encouraged musical elites and audiences to accept the dominant position and political missions of these regimes. Party leaders invested considerable resources in the attempt to create an authorized musical language that would secure and maintain hegemony over the cultural and wider social worlds. The responses of composers and audiences ran the gamut from enthusiasm to suspicion, but indifference was not an option.

Composing Ourselves written by Randy Koch and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Education categories.

When Randy Koch, a transplanted Minnesotan, began teaching English composition to Spanish-speaking and bilingual students on the Texas-Mexico border, he recorded his experiences in a journal made up entirely of sonnets. These sonnets vary in form from strict to loose to experimental to absolutely wild. This highly entertaining, moving, important book deals with the themes of education, communication, good writing, and bicultural community. Some of the poems are funny, some sad, some worried, some joyful. Many of them are passionate, but all of them are compassionate. Koch celebrates the joys of English and the pleasures of teaching; but more importantly, these poems are tributes to Randy's students, the people who have changed his life, one class day at a time.
