This book provides a comprehensive and wide-ranging introduction to the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering in a distinct and clear manner. The book is intended for a core introductory course in the area of foundations and applications of mechanical engineering, prescribed for the first-year students of all disciplines of engineering. The book develops an intuitive understanding of the basic principles of thermodynamics as well as of the principles governing the conversion of heat into energy. Numerous illustrative examples are provided to fortify these concepts throughout. The book gives the students a feel for how thermodynamics is applied in engineering practice in the areas of heat engines, steam boilers, internal combustion engines, refrigeration and air conditioning, and to devices such as turbines, pumps and compressors. The book also provides a basic understanding of mechanical design, illustrating the principles through a discussion of devices designed for the transmission of motion and power such as couplings, clutches and brakes. No book on basic mechanical engineering is complete without an introduction to materials science. The text covers the treatment of the common engineering materials, highlighting their properties and applications. Finally, the role of lubrication and lubricants in reducing the wear and tear of parts in mechanical systems, is lucidly explained in the concluding chapter. The text features several fully worked-out examples, a fairly large number of numerical problems with answers, end-of-chapter review questions and multiple choice questions, which all enhance the value of the text to the students. Besides the students studying for an engineering degree, this book is also suitable for study by the students of AMIE and the students of diploma level courses.

ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS A comprehensive text on the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering Engineering Applications presents the fundamental principles and applications of the statics and mechanics of materials in complex mechanical systems design. Using MATLAB to help solve problems with numerical and analytical calculations, authors and noted experts on the topic Mihai Dupac and Dan B. Marghitu offer an understanding of the static behaviour of engineering structures and components while considering the mechanics of materials knowledge as the most important part of their design. The authors explore the concepts, derivations, and interpretations of general principles and discuss the creation of mathematical models and the formulation of mathematical equations. This practical text also highlights the solutions of problems solved analytically and numerically using MATLAB. The figures generated with MATLAB reinforce visual learning for students and professionals as they study the programs. This important text: Shows how mechanical principles are applied to engineering design Covers basic material with both mathematical and physical insight Provides an understanding of classical mechanical principles Offers problem solutions using MATLAB Reinforces learning using visual and computational techniques Written for students and professional mechanical engineers, Engineering Applications helpshone reasoning skills in order to interpret data and generate mathematical equations, offering different methods of solving them for evaluating and designing engineering systems.

Studying engineering, whether it is mechanical, electrical or civil, relies heavily on an understanding of mathematics. This textbook clearly demonstrates the relevance of mathematical principles and shows how to apply them in real-life engineering problems. It deliberately starts at an elementary level so that students who are starting from a low knowledge base will be able to quickly get up to the level required. Students who have not studied mathematics for some time will find this an excellent refresher. Each chapter starts with the basics before gently increasing in complexity. A full outline of essential definitions, formulae, laws and procedures is presented, before real world practical situations and problem solving demonstrate how the theory is applied. Focusing on learning through practice, it contains simple explanations, supported by 1600 worked problems and over 3600 further problems contained within 384 exercises throughout the text. In addition, 35 Revision tests together with 9 Multiple-choice tests are included at regular intervals for further strengthening of knowledge. An interactive companion website provides material for students and lecturers, including detailed solutions to all 3600 further problems.
