Pillsbury, Michael Rinehart, David Summers, Wilfried van Damme, and Georges S. Zouain _____________________________________________ How do we do justice to art when we treat it not as a discrete European or other regional tradition, but as a worldwide phenomenon with a long history? In this groundbreaking book, leading academics, curators, bibliographers, and representatives of international organizations from every continent explain the ways they deal with the conflict between the need to compress and the desire to express. Anyone who faces this challenge, whether in developing a course at university or school, writing a textbook, installing a museum collection, mounting an exhibition, or otherwise presenting the world’s cultural heritage will want to read it.

From archiving data to CD-ROMs, and from coding theory to image analysis, many facets of computing make use of data compression in one form or another. This is an overview of the many different types of compression, including a taxonomy, an analysis of the most common systems of compression, discussion of their relative benefits and disadvantages, and their most common uses. Readers are presupposed to have a basic understanding of computer science -- essentially the storage of data in bytes and bits and computing terminology -- but otherwise this book is self-contained. It divides neatly into four main parts based on the main branches of data compression: run length encoding, statistical methods, dictionary-based methods, and lossy image compression. All of the most well-known compression techniques are covered including Zip, BinHex, Huffman coding, and GIF.

Genomic Signal Processing And Statistics written by Edward R. Dougherty and has been published by Hindawi Publishing Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with DNA microarrays categories.

Recent advances in genomic studies have stimulated synergetic research and development in many cross-disciplinary areas. Processing the vast genomic data, especially the recent large-scale microarray gene expression data, to reveal the complex biological functionality, represents enormous challenges to signal processing and statistics. This perspective naturally leads to a new field, genomic signal processing (GSP), which studies the processing of genomic signals by integrating the theory of signal processing and statistics. Written by an international, interdisciplinary team of authors, this invaluable edited volume is accessible to students just entering this emergent field, and to researchers, both in academia and in industry, in the fields of molecular biology, engineering, statistics, and signal processing. The book provides tutorial-level overviews and addresses the specific needs of genomic signal processing students and researchers as a reference book. The book aims to address current genomic challenges by exploiting potential synergies between genomics, signal processing, and statistics, with special emphasis on signal processing and statistical tools for structural and functional understanding of genomic data. The first part of this book provides a brief history of genomic research and a background introduction from both biological and signal-processing/statistical perspectives, so that readers can easily follow the material presented in the rest of the book. In what follows, overviews of state-of-the-art techniques are provided. We start with a chapter on sequence analysis, and follow with chapters on feature selection, classification, and clustering of microarray data. We then discuss the modeling, analysis, and simulation of biological regulatory networks, especially gene regulatory networks based on Boolean and Bayesian approaches. Visualization and compression of gene data, and supercomputer implementation of genomic signal processing systems are also treated. Finally, we discuss systems biology and medical applications of genomic research as well as the future trends in genomic signal processing and statistics research.

The Beatles And Vocal Expression written by Bláithín Duggan and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-01 with Music categories.

The Beatles and Vocal Expression examines popular song through the topic of paralanguage – a sub-category of nonverbal communication that addresses characteristics of speech that modify meaning and convey emotion. It responds to the general consensus regarding the limitations of Western art music notation to analyse popular song, assesses paralinguistic voice qualities giving rise to expressive tropes within and across songs, and lastly addresses gaps in existing Beatles scholarship. Taking The Beatles’ UK studio albums (1963–1970), paralinguistic voice qualities are examined in relation to concepts, characteristics, metaphors, and functions of paralanguage in vocal performance. Tropes, such as rising and falling intonation on words of woe, have historical connections to performative and conversational techniques. This interdisciplinary analysis is achieved through musicology, sound studies, applied linguistics, and cultural history. The new methodology locates paralinguistic voice qualities in recordings, identifies features, shows functions, and draws aural threads within and across popular songs.
