Humans have the ability to learn complex motor skills like ballet dancing, breakdancing, gymnastics and riding a bicycle. Ideally, these skills are robust to many conditions: they can be performed whether the day is windy or the ground is slippery. This thesis introduces computational tools for physics-based simulated characters to acquire robust motor skills. We show how to optimize control solutions to produce complex motor skills, such as breakdancing, handstands and hand walks. The cost function is specified in terms of intuitive motion properties (e.g., place the hands close to the ground, place the feet as high as possible, maximize angular momentum in some direction, etc.). Unlike previous work, our method does not require contacts to be pre-specified, which simplifies the synthesis process and allows tackling motions that were previously outside the scope of physics-based methods. Our approach is currently too slow for online applications that require control solutions for a range of tasks to be performed. We show that if we restrict the problem to specific movements, it is possible to design online controllers that achieve a range of tasks and that are robust to disturbances. We demonstrate this for a variety of rotational movements, including cartwheels, dives, flips and handsprings. The control solutions described so far are only valid for a small set of states of the character. We develop a method to systematically expand this set, thereby increasing the robustness of our control solutions and allowing for their sequencing. Once a skill is learned by a character with a particular body shape, we show how it can be transferred to a character with a different body shape. The method discovers surprisingly natural results, such as a heavier character avoiding losing balance by taking extra steps and stretching out its arms. For a given character, this opens up a large reservoir of skills that can be acquired.

Improvements in task performance following practice can occur as a result of changes in distinct cognitive and neural processes. In some cases, we can improve our performance by selecting a more successful behavior that is already part of our available repertoire. Skill learning, on the other hand, refers to a slower process that results in improving the ability to perform a behavior, i.e., it involves the acquisition of a behavior that was not available to the controller before training. Skill learning can take place both in the sensory and in the motor domains. Sensory skill acquisition in perceptual learning tasks is measured by improvements in sensory acuity through practice-induced changes in the sensitivity of relevant neural networks. Motor skill is harder to define as the term is used whenever a motor learning behavior improves along some dimension. Nevertheless, we have recently argued that as in perceptual learning, acuity is an integral component in motor skill learning. In this special topic we set out to integrate experimental and theoretical work on perceptual and motor skill learning and to stimulate a discussion regarding the similarities and differences between these two kinds of learning.

Abstract: "Outside Piagetian theory, sensory-motor co-ordinations are often relegated to the domain of 'mere' motor skill, but their development shares important features with that of cognitive structures. This paper focusses on early action, to assess the prospects for an account of development that is based on a system's initial mechanisms and processes of interaction with its environment without prespecification of stable patterns of organization that will be acquired. A truly epigenetic account proves elusive, with empirical findings increasingly being taken to indicate preadaptation and strong domain-specific constraints on infant abilities. Despite this, evidence can be marshalled for variability, which is compatible with a general-purpose process of internally motivated and structured organizational change. However, the mechanisms underlying this process are obscure. Clarification is sought by considering current attempts to understand sensory-motor co-ordination through the construction of articifial agent-environment systems. Disappointingly, such approaches often share a need to incorporate an explicit bias towards the recurrent behaviour patterns that will come to have functional significance for the systems they aim to explain. Synchronic systems in this vein exploit predesigned sensory-motor connections with the environment. Their diachronic counterparts feature designer specification of acceptable outcomes for activity in the form of problem-specific fitness functions or goal-like value schemes that are credited to evolution. Neither computational nor dynamical systems concepts provide an automatic escape from this problem, but most promising may be robotics approaches informed by dynamical systems theory that challenge mainstream views of information and information-processing."
