New computational design tools have evolved rapidly and been increasingly applied in the field of design in recent years, complimenting and even replacing the traditional design media and approaches. Design as both the process and product are changing due to the emergence and adoption of these new technologies. Understanding and assessing the impact of these new computational design environments on design and designers is important for advancing design in the contemporary context. Do these new computational environments support or hinder design creativity? How do those tools facilitate designers’ thinking? Such knowledge is also important for the future development of design technologies. Research shows that design is never a mysterious non-understandable process, for example, one general view is that design process shares a common analysis-synthesis-evaluation model, during which designers interact between design problem and solution spaces. Understanding designers’ thinking in different environments is the key to design research, education and practice. This book focuses on emerging computational design environments, whose impact on design and designers have not been comprehensively and systematically studied. It comprises three parts. The history and recent developments of computational design technologies are introduced in Part I. The main categories of technologies cover from computer-aided drafting and modelling tools, to visual programming and scripting tools for algorithmic design, to advanced interfaces and platforms for interactions between designers, between designers and computers, and between the virtual environment and the physical reality. To critically explore design thinking, especially in these new computational design environments, formal approaches to studying design thinking and design cognition are introduced and compared in Part II, drawing on literature and studies from the 70s to the current era. Part III concludes the book by exploring the impact of different computational design technologies on design and designers, using a series of case studies conducted by the author team building on their close collaboration over the past five years. The book offers new insights into designers’ thinking in the rapidly evolving computational design environments, which have not been critically and systematically studied and reported in the current literature. The book is meant for design researchers, educators and students, professional practitioners and consultants, as well as people who are interested in computational design in general.

Applying computational intelligence for product design is a fast-growing and promising research area in computer sciences and industrial engineering. However, there is currently a lack of books, which discuss this research area. This book discusses a wide range of computational intelligence techniques for implementation on product design. It covers common issues on product design from identification of customer requirements in product design, determination of importance of customer requirements, determination of optimal design attributes, relating design attributes and customer satisfaction, integration of marketing aspects into product design, affective product design, to quality control of new products. Approaches for refinement of computational intelligence are discussed, in order to address different issues on product design. Cases studies of product design in terms of development of real-world new products are included, in order to illustrate the design procedures, as well as the effectiveness of the computational intelligence based approaches to product design. This book covers the state-of-art of computational intelligence methods for product design, which provides a clear picture to post-graduate students in industrial engineering and computer science. It is particularly suitable for researchers and professionals working on computational intelligence for product design. It provides concepts, techniques and methodologies, for product designers in applying computational intelligence to deal with product design.

Computers have been employed for some time in engineering design mainly as numerical or graphical tools to assist analysis and draughting. The advent of the technology of artificial intelligence and expert systems has enabled computers to be applied to less deterministic design tasks which require symbolic manipulation and reasoning, instead of only routine number processing. This book presents recent examples of such applications, focusing on mechanical and manufacturing design. The term 'design' is interpreted here in its wider sense to include creative activities such as planning. The book covers a wide spectrum of design operations ranging from component and product design through to process, tooling and systems design. Its aim is to expose researchers, engineers and engineering designers to several developments in the emerging field of intelligent CAD and to alert them of the possibilites and opportunities in this exciting field.

Artificial Intelligence in Design '91 is a collection of 47 papers from the First International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Design held at Edinburgh in June 1991. The papers in this book are grouped into 13 headings, starting with a background of AI design systems and to which extent AI that results from being used as planning tool be applied to quality-oriented design processes in architecture. A constraint-driven approach to object-oriented design is also shown on real-world objects. The use of CADSYN in the structural design of buildings is examined, along with design-dependent knowledge and design-independent knowledge. Discussions on empowering designers with integrated design environments are given whereby design objects may be retrieved from catalogues without requiring users to form queries. Mention is given to automated adjustment of parameter values frequently used in computer routine applications. The book also introduces the Computer Aided Design (CAD) as applied to architecture. Design representation using data models, non-monotonic reasoning in design, and the cognitive aspects of design using empirical studies are discussed. Topics of the industrial applications of AI in design, such as the needed steps to develop a successful AI-based tool, and a review of the Castlemain Project and telecommunication distribution networks follow. This book is suitable for programmers, computer science students, and architects and engineers who use computers in their line of work.
