This book provides a comprehensive exploration of computational intelligence techniques and their applications, offering valuable insights into advanced information processing, machine learning concepts, and their impact on agile manufacturing systems. Computational Intelligence presents a new concept for advanced information processing. Computational Intelligence (CI) is the principle, architecture, implementation, and growth of machine learning concepts that are physiologically and semantically inspired. Computational Intelligence methods aim to develop an approach to evaluating and creating flexible processing of human information, such as sensing, understanding, learning, recognizing, and thinking. The Artificial Neural Network simulates the human nervous system’s physiological characteristics and has been implemented numerically for non-linear mapping. Fuzzy Logic Systems simulate the human brain’s psychological characteristics and have been used for linguistic translation through membership functions and bioinformatics. The Genetic Algorithm simulates computer evolution and has been applied to solve problems with optimization algorithms for improvements in diagnostic and treatment technologies for various diseases. To expand the agility and learning capacity of manufacturing systems, these methods play essential roles. This book will express the computer vision techniques that make manufacturing systems more flexible, efficient, robust, adaptive, and productive by examining many applications and research into computational intelligence techniques concerning the main problems in design, making plans, and manufacturing goods in agile manufacturing systems.

Ten years of ,,Fuzzy Days“ in Dortmund! What started as a relatively small workshop in 1991 has now become one of the best known smaller conferences on Computational Intelligence in the world. It fact, it was (to my best knowledge) the ?rst conference to use this term, in 1994, although I confess that another, larger conference was announced ?rst and the trade mark “Computational Intelligence was not coined in Dortmund. I believe, that the success of this conference is grounded on the quality of its reviewedandinvitedpapersaswellasitsgoodorganization. Fromthebeginning, we have sent every paper anonymously to ?ve referees, and we have always accepted only around 50% of the papers sent in. This year it was a little less than that. I would like to thank everybody who helped us by considering Dortmund’s Fuzzy Days as the conference at which to appear. I know that among the - stracts not accepted there were some quite good ones, but we were restricted to a ?xed number. I also know that referees do a good job but cannot always judge wisely from abstracts. Hence my apologies to those who did not make it this year. Please try again! I would like to point out that our conference also has a good regional re- tation. I am grateful to the City of Dortmund, its Lord Mayor Dr. Langemeyer, the Dortmund project, the DFG – Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the KVR – Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet, the Martin-Schmeißer-Stiftung, and the C- line AG/Quantum GmbH for their valuable support.

Computational Intelligence (CI) is a recently emerging area in fundamental and applied research, exploiting a number of advanced information processing technologies that mainly embody neural networks, fuzzy logic and evolutionary computation. With a major concern to exploiting the tolerance for imperfection, uncertainty, and partial truth to achieve tractability, robustness and low solution cost, it becomes evident that composing methods of CI should be working concurrently rather than separately. It is this conviction that research on the synergism of CI paradigms has experienced significant growth in the last decade with some areas nearing maturity while many others remaining unresolved. This book systematically summarizes the latest findings and sheds light on the respective fields that might lead to future breakthroughs.

Fuzzy Days in Dortmund were held for the first time in 1991. Initially, the con ference was intended for scientists and practitioners as a platform for discussions on theory and application of fuzzy logic. Early on, synergetic links with neural networks were included and the conference evolved gradually to embrace the full spectrum of what is now called Computational Intelligence (CI). Therefore, it seemed logical to launch the 4th Fuzzy Days in 1994 as a conference for CI—one of the world's first conferences featuring fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolu tionary algorithms together in one event. Following this successful tradition, the 6th Fuzzy Days' aim is to provide an international forum for reporting significant results on the theory and application of Cl-methods. Once again, we have received a remarkable number of papers. I would like to express my gratitude to all who have been interested in presenting their work within the framework of this conference and to the members of the programme committee for their valuable work (in this edition each paper was reviewed by five referees). In particular, I wish to thank all keynote and tutorial speakers for their commitment. Last but not least, I am obliged to the Deutsche Forschun- gemeinschaft and Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet for their financial support.

Computational Intelligence with its roots in Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks and Evolutionary Algorithms has become an important research and application field in computer science in the last decade. Methodologies from these areas and combinations of them enable users from engineering, business, medicine and many more branches to capture and process vague, incomplete, uncertain and imprecise data and knowledge. Many algorithms and tools have been developed to solve problems in the realms of high and low level control, information processing, diagnostics, decision support, classification, optimisation and many more. This book tries to show the impact and feedback between theory and applications of Computational Intelligence, highlighted on selected examples.
