The conference series Logical Aspects of Computational Linguistics (LACL) aims at providing a forum for the presentation and discussion of current research in all the formal and logical aspects of computational linguistics. The LACL initiative started with a workshop held in Nancy (France) in 1995. Selected papers from this event have appeared as a special issue of the Journal of Logic Language and Information, Volume 7(4), 1998. In 1996, LACL shifted to the format of an international conference. LACL’96 and ’97 were both held in Nancy (France). The proceedings appeared as volumes 1328 and 1582 of the Springer Lecture Notes in Arti cial Intelligence. This volume contains selected papers of the third international conference on Logical Aspects of Computational Linguistics (LACL’98), held in Grenoble, France, from December 14 to 16, 1998. The conference was organized by the U- versity Pierre Mend es-France (Grenoble 2) together with LORIA (Laboratoire Lorrain d’Informatique et Applications, Nancy). On the basis of 33 submitted 4-page abstracts, the Program Committee selected 19 contributions for pres- tation. In addition to the selected papers, the program featured three invited talks, by Maarten de Rijke (ILLC, Amsterdam), Makoto Kanazawa (Chiba U- versity, Japan), and Fernando Pereira (AT&T Labs). After the conference, the contributors were invited to submit a full paper for the conference proceedings.

This book provides a thorough introduction to the subfield of theoretical computer science known as grammatical inference from a computational linguistic perspective. Grammatical inference provides principled methods for developing computationally sound algorithms that learn structure from strings of symbols. The relationship to computational linguistics is natural because many research problems in computational linguistics are learning problems on words, phrases, and sentences: What algorithm can take as input some finite amount of data (for instance a corpus, annotated or otherwise) and output a system that behaves "correctly" on specific tasks? Throughout the text, the key concepts of grammatical inference are interleaved with illustrative examples drawn from problems in computational linguistics. Special attention is paid to the notion of "learning bias." In the context of computational linguistics, such bias can be thought to reflect common (ideally universal) properties of natural languages. This bias can be incorporated either by identifying a learnable class of languages which contains the language to be learned or by using particular strategies for optimizing parameter values. Examples are drawn largely from two linguistic domains (phonology and syntax) which span major regions of the Chomsky Hierarchy (from regular to context-sensitive classes). The conclusion summarizes the major lessons and open questions that grammatical inference brings to computational linguistics. As an interdisciplinary field, computational linguistics has its sources in several areas of science, each with its own goals, methods, and historical background. Thereby, it has remained unclear which components fit together and which do not. This suggests three possible approaches to designing a computational linguistics textbook. The first approach proceeds from one's own school of thought, usually determined of study, rather than by a well-informed, delib by chance, such as one's initial place erate choice. The goal is to extend the inherited theoretical framework or method to as many aspects of language analysis as possible. As a consequence, the issue of com pat ibility with other approaches in the field need not be addressed and one's assumptions are questioned at best in connection with 'puzzling problems. ' The second approach takes the viewpoint of an objective observer and aims to survey the field as completely as possible. However, the large number of different schools, methods, and tasks necessitates a subjective selection. Furthermore, the pre sumed neutrality provides no incentive to investigate the compatibility between the elements selected. The third approach aims at solving a comprehensive functional task, with the differ To arrive at the desired solution, suitability ent approaches being ordered relative to it. and compatibility of the different elements adopted must be investigated with regard to the task at hand.

One of the aims of Natural Language Processing is to facilitate .the use of computers by allowing their users to communicate in natural language. There are two important aspects to person-machine communication: understanding and generating. While natural language understanding has been a major focus of research, natural language generation is a relatively new and increasingly active field of research. This book presents an overview of the state of the art in natural language generation, describing both new results and directions for new research. The principal emphasis of natural language generation is not only to facili tate the use of computers but also to develop a computational theory of human language ability.
