Numerical Methods with MATLAB provides a highly-practical reference work to assist anyone working with numerical methods. A wide range of techniques are introduced, their merits discussed and fully working MATLAB code samples supplied to demonstrate how they can be coded and applied. Numerical methods have wide applicability across many scientific, mathematical, and engineering disciplines and are most often employed in situations where working out an exact answer to the problem by another method is impractical. Numerical Methods with MATLAB presents each topic in a concise and readable format to help you learn fast and effectively. It is not intended to be a reference work to the conceptual theory that underpins the numerical methods themselves. A wide range of reference works are readily available to supply this information. If, however, you want assistance in applying numerical methods then this is the book for you.

This textbook provides readers a comprehensive introduction to numerical methods, using MATLAB®. The authors discuss the theory and application of the most often used numerical methods, using MATLAB as a computational tool. The book is designed to be accessible to readers of varying backgrounds, so the presentation focuses more on the description, implementation, and application of the methods and less on the mathematical details. This book not only covers the most important methods and techniques of scientific computation, but also contains a great amount of code and implementations, facilitating the process of learning and application.

This book demonstrates scientific computing by presenting twelve computational projects in several disciplines including Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Science, Computer Aided Design, Signal Processing and more. Each follows typical steps of scientific computing, from physical and mathematical description, to numerical formulation and programming and critical discussion of results. The text teaches practical methods not usually available in basic textbooks: numerical checking of accuracy, choice of boundary conditions, effective solving of linear systems, comparison to exact solutions and more. The final section of each project contains the solutions to proposed exercises and guides the reader in using the MATLAB scripts available online.

Preface to the First Edition This textbook is an introduction to Scienti?c Computing. We will illustrate several numerical methods for the computer solution of c- tain classes of mathematical problems that cannot be faced by paper and pencil. We will show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of di?erential equations. With this aim, in Chapter 1 we will illustrate the rules of the game thatcomputersadoptwhenstoringandoperatingwith realandcomplex numbers, vectors and matrices. In order to make our presentation concrete and appealing we will 1 adopt the programming environment MATLAB as a faithful c- panion. We will gradually discover its principal commands, statements and constructs. We will show how to execute all the algorithms that we introduce throughout the book. This will enable us to furnish an - mediate quantitative assessment of their theoretical properties such as stability, accuracy and complexity. We will solve several problems that will be raisedthrough exercises and examples, often stemming from s- ci?c applications.

Computational Mathematics: Models, Methods, and Analysis with MATLAB and MPI explores and illustrates this process. Each section of the first six chapters is motivated by a specific application. The author applies a model, selects a numerical method, implements computer simulations, and assesses the ensuing results. These chapters include an abundance of MATLAB code. By studying the code instead of using it as a "black box, " you take the first step toward more sophisticated numerical modeling. The last four chapters focus on multiprocessing algorithms implemented using message passing interface (MPI). These chapters include Fortran 9x codes that illustrate the basic MPI subroutines and revisit the applications of the previous chapters from a parallel implementation perspective. All of the codes are available for download from www4.ncsu.edu./~white. This book is not just about math, not just about computing, and not just about applications, but about all three--in other words, computational science. Whether used as an undergraduate textbook, for self-study, or for reference, it builds the foundation you need to make numerical modeling and simulation integral parts of your investigational toolbox.

In this popular text for an Numerical Analysis course, the authors introduce several major methods of solving various partial differential equations (PDEs) including elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic equations. It covers traditional techniques including the classic finite difference method, finite element method, and state-of-the-art numercial methods. The text uniquely emphasizes both theoretical numerical analysis and practical implementation of the algorithms in MATLAB. This new edition includes a new chapter, Finite Value Method, the presentation has been tightened, new exercises and applications are included, and the text refers now to the latest release of MATLAB. Key Selling Points: A successful textbook for an undergraduate text on numerical analysis or methods taught in mathematics and computer engineering. This course is taught in every university throughout the world with an engineering department or school. Competitive advantage broader numerical methods (including finite difference, finite element, meshless method, and finite volume method), provides the MATLAB source code for most popular PDEs with detailed explanation about the implementation and theoretical analysis. No other existing textbook in the market offers a good combination of theoretical depth and practical source codes.

The book is designed to serve as a textbook for courses offered to graduate and upper-undergraduate students enrolled in mechanical engineering. The book attempts to make students with mathematical backgrounds comfortable with numerical methods. The book also serves as a handy reference for practicing engineers who are interested in applications. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner, with the essence of each numerical method clearly stated. This makes it easy for professional engineers, students, and early career researchers to follow the material presented in the book. The structure of the book has been modeled accordingly. It is divided into four modules: i) solution of a system of equations and eigenvalues which includes linear equations, determining eigenvalues, and solution of nonlinear equations; ii) function approximations: interpolation, data fit, numerical differentiation, and numerical integration; iii) solution of ordinary differential equations—initial value problems and boundary value problems; and iv) solution of partial differential equations—parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic PDEs. Each section of the book includes exercises to reinforce the concepts, and problems have been added at the end of each chapter. Exercise problems may be solved by using computational tools such as scientific calculators, spreadsheet programs, and MATLAB codes. The detailed coverage and pedagogical tools make this an ideal textbook for students, early career researchers, and professionals.
