The aluminothermic (AT) welding process, also known as Thermit welding, is an essential process for joining and repairing rails due to its simplicity, robustness, portability and economic usage. This book presents a multi-fluid, multiphase numerical model to predict the thermal flow field within the mould during the pouring and solidification stages of the AT welding process, developed using the finite volume method-based open-source CFD software OpenFOAM. The numerical model is rigorously validated not only against well-documented cases in the literature but also through an in-house, low-cost experiment designed to investigate the temporal and spatial evolution of the solid-liquid interface front during the melting of paraffin wax in a rectangular enclosure in the presence of a gas phase. The simulation results show good agreement with the validation cases. Moreover, insights into the thermal pouring stage with solid-liquid phase change phenomena are provided. For this purpose, the available k − ε turbulence model is also extended to incorporate the solid-liquid phase change phenomena. Finally, the temporal and spatial evolution of the solid-liquid interface front during the solidification stage is examined, and the influence of initial molten metal temperature and thermophysical properties on the final weld profiles is systematically studied.

Mechanochemistry as a branch of solid state chemistry enquires into processes which proceed in solids due to the application of mechanical energy. This provides a thorough, up to date overview of mechanochemistry of solids and minerals. Applications of mechanochemistry in nanoscience with special impact on nanogeoscience are described. Selected advanced identification methods, most frequently applied in nanoscience, are described as well as the advantage of mechanochemical approach in minerals engineering. Examples of industrial applications are given. Mechanochemical technology is being applied in many industrial fields: powder metallurgy (synthesis of nanometals, alloys and nanocompounds), building industry (activation of cements), chemical industry (solid waste treatment, catalyst synthesis, coal ashes utilization), minerals engineering (ore enrichment, enhancement of processes of extractive metallurgy), agriculture industry (solubility increase of fertilizers), and pharmaceutical industry (improvement of solubility and bioavailability of drugs). This reference serves as an introduction to newcomers to mechanochemistry, and encourages more experienced researchers to broaden their knowledge and discover novel applications in the field.

This junior/senior textbook presents fundamental concepts ofstructure property relations and a description of how theseconcpets apply to every metallic element except iron. Part One of the book describes general concepts of crystalstructure, microstructure and related factors on the mechanical, thermal, magnetic and electronic properties of nonferrous metals, intermetallic compounds and metal matrix composites. Part Two discusses all the nonferrous metallic elements from twoperspectives: First it explains how the concepts presented in PartOne define the properties of a particular metallic element and itsalloys. Second is a description of the major engineering uses ofeach metal. This section features sidebar pieces describingparticular physical property oddities, engineering applications andcase studies. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutionsto all the problems in the book is available from the Wileyeditorial department. Vehicle Track Coupled Dynamics written by Wanming Zhai and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-31 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book systematically presents the theory, numerical implementation, field experiments and practical engineering applications of the ‘Vehicle–Track Coupled Dynamics’. Representing a radical departure from classic vehicle system dynamics and track dynamics, the vehicle–track coupled dynamics theory considers the vehicle and track as one interactive and integrated system coupled through wheel–rail interaction. This new theory enables a more comprehensive and accurate solution to the train–track dynamic interaction problem which is a fundamental and important research topic in railway transportation system, especially for the rapidly developed high-speed and heavy-haul railways. It has been widely applied in practical railway engineering. Dr. Wanming Zhai is a Chair Professor of Railway Engineering at Southwest Jiaotong University, where he is also chairman of the Academic Committee and Director of the Train and Track Research Institute. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one of the leading scientists in railway system dynamics. Professor Zhai is Editor-in-Chief of both the International Journal of Rail Transportation, published by Taylor & Francis Group, and the Journal of Modern Transportation, published by Springer. In addition, he is a trustee of the International Association for Vehicle System Dynamics, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Vice President of the Chinese Society for Vibration Engineering. /div
