In recent years there has been a rising awareness within the international scientific commu nity that there is a need to study the various aspects of the integration of images and new me dia both from the point of view of computer science as well as from other areas which deal with users' interface to information sources, in particular design, psychology, education, po litical science, sociology, and philosophy. To a certain extent the view of the topic from any single one of these disciplines leads to a one-sided analysis. Indeed, interdisciplinary approaches involving two or more of them ap plied to selected research problems have emerged. Examples of scientific conferences which embody such approaches are CHI and the German "Mensch und Computer" Conferences, where in particular the collaboration between disciplines is furthered. Truly interdisciplinary research involving pairs of disciplines, or even triplets or quadruples of these areas, are still few and far between.

Dieses Phänomen ist sicherlich auch mitverantwortlich flir die faszinierende, welt weite Verbreitung von internetbasierten Arbeiten. Das graphische Layout von Internetseiten, die Vernetzung von Informationsrepräsentationen und die Verknüpfung von bildhaften Darstellungen mit Texten machen das World-Wide-Web bereits heute zu einem beliebten und effizienten Arbeits und UnterhaltungsmitteL Dadurch gewinnen grundlegende Fragen zu Bildern im allgemeinen an Aktualität. Fragen danach, was Bilder eigentlich sind, wie sie von Menschen wahrgenommen, verarbeitet und genutzt werden, sind zwar nicht neu, stehen nun aber in einem neuen Licht. Von besonderem Interesse sind Antwor ten auf diese Fragen heute deshalb, weil die Diskussion mittlerweile um Überlegungen ergänzt wor den ist, wie Computer Bilder flir eine breite Masse an Benutzern erzeugen können. Diese Bilder sollen beispielsweise situationsgerecht und auf aktuelle Bedürfnisse von Benutzern eingehen. Die ses erfordert flexible Algorithmen zur Kodierung von Informationen in Bilder. Dabei befindet sich die Erforschung von den Bildern zugrunde liegenden Prinzipien als Verbindung zwischen Rechner und Benutzer noch in der Anfangsphase, zumindest im Vergleich dazu, wie viel über Sprache bekannt ist. Während das Gebiet der Linguistik bereits in der Nachkriegszeit beson ders aufzublühen begann, welches dann auch dazu führte, daß sich die Computerlinguistik als ei genständige Disziplin herauskristallisierte, wurde an Bildern nicht in vergleichbarer Weise systema tisch gearbeitet. Während die Linguistik und die Computerlinguistik die traditionellen Grenzen von Wissenschaftsdisziplinen erfolgreichüberwinden konnten, beginnt dieser Prozeß in Bezug auf Bil der erst in jüngster Zeit.
