Computer Media and Communication: A Reader is a collection of key texts selected for their significance to thought about computers as media. The book is divided into two parts. The chapters in the first part offer a chronological overview of how thinking about computers as a means ofcommunication developed, while the second part offers prophetic analyses of the implications of computer media for culture and society, while exemplifying significant directions of current research. The book not only provides an insight into how thinking about computers as media has developed butalso is an excellent guide for students and others interested in the field of media and communication studies. (This book is the first in the Oxford Readers in Media and Communication series under the General Editorship of Professors Brian Winston and Everette Dennis which will be an authoritative wide-ranging series of readings for media students. There are more than eighty institutions in the UK offeringcourses in the field at present and in the USA this number is ten times as great.)

Traditionally, scientific fields have defined boundaries, and scientists work on research problems within those boundaries. However, from time to time those boundaries get shifted or blurred to evolve new fields. For instance, the original goal of computer vision was to understand a single image of a scene, by identifying objects, their structure, and spatial arrangements. This has been referred to as image understanding. Recently, computer vision has gradually been making the transition away from understanding single images to analyz ing image sequences, or video understanding. Video understanding deals with understanding of video sequences, e. g. , recognition of gestures, activities, fa cial expressions, etc. The main shift in the classic paradigm has been from the recognition of static objects in the scene to motion-based recognition of actions and events. Video understanding has overlapping research problems with other fields, therefore blurring the fixed boundaries. Computer graphics, image processing, and video databases have obvious overlap with computer vision. The main goal of computer graphics is to gener ate and animate realistic looking images, and videos. Researchers in computer graphics are increasingly employing techniques from computer vision to gen erate the synthetic imagery. A good example of this is image-based rendering and modeling techniques, in which geometry, appearance, and lighting is de rived from real images using computer vision techniques. Here the shift is from synthesis to analysis followed by synthesis.

An Introduction To Digital Media written by Tony Feldman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-02 with Social Science categories.

In this clear and highly accessible book, Tony Feldman provides an account of the evolution and application of digital media. Clarifying its underlying technologies, he identifies its immense commercial and human potential. Using as a starting point a simplification which considers new media in two distinct sectors; packaged 'off-line' media such as CD-ROMs; and the world of transmitted media which includes digital broadcasting and interactive online services, Feldman provides a comprehensive overview of the digital media landscape. Focusing on multimedia and the entertainment media he describes and analyses the spectacular rise of CD-based information and the equally revolutionary development of the Internet and online services. Set within a commercial context, readers can identify the potential to generate revenue and profit from the new media. An Introduction to Digital Media concludes with a strategic assessment of the implications of going digital for individuals, companies and corporations.

The New Media Reader written by Noah Wardrip-Fruin and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-02-14 with Social Science categories.

A sourcebook of historical written texts, video documentation, and working programs that form the foundation of new media. This reader collects the texts, videos, and computer programs—many of them now almost impossible to find—that chronicle the history and form the foundation of the still-emerging field of new media. General introductions by Janet Murray and Lev Manovich, along with short introductions to each of the texts, place the works in their historical context and explain their significance. The texts were originally published between World War II—when digital computing, cybernetic feedback, and early notions of hypertext and the Internet first appeared—and the emergence of the World Wide Web—when they entered the mainstream of public life. The texts are by computer scientists, artists, architects, literary writers, interface designers, cultural critics, and individuals working across disciplines. The contributors include (chronologically) Jorge Luis Borges, Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, Ivan Sutherland, William S. Burroughs, Ted Nelson, Italo Calvino, Marshall McLuhan, Jean Baudrillard, Nicholas Negroponte, Alan Kay, Bill Viola, Sherry Turkle, Richard Stallman, Brenda Laurel, Langdon Winner, Robert Coover, and Tim Berners-Lee. The CD accompanying the book contains examples of early games, digital art, independent literary efforts, software created at universities, and home-computer commercial software. Also on the CD is digitized video, documenting new media programs and artwork for which no operational version exists. One example is a video record of Douglas Engelbart's first presentation of the mouse, word processor, hyperlink, computer-supported cooperative work, video conferencing, and the dividing up of the screen we now call non-overlapping windows; another is documentation of Lynn Hershman's Lorna, the first interactive video art installation.

State Of The Art In Digital Media And Applications written by Rae Earnshaw and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-25 with Computers categories.

This book presents the user-facing aspects of digital media, from the web and computer games, to mobile technologies and social media, and demonstrates how these are continuously growing and developing. The convergence of IT, telecommunications, and media is bringing about a revolution in the way information is collected, stored, accessed and distributed. Rae Earnshaw's book explores the principal factors driving this and the ways in which social and cultural contexts are affected by media content. This is Professor Earnshaw's fourth book in a series that focuses on digital media and creativity, and through the use of Case Studies; the theoretical, practical and technical aspects of digital media are examined. Readers are informed about how the user as content creator, publisher and broadcaster is changing the traditional roles of news media, publishers and entertainment corporations. Topics such as the evolution of digital imaging and the phenomenon of social media are discussed in relation to this. Professor Earnshaw also demonstrates how changes in technology produce shifts in the ways that consumers utilize it, in an increasing variety of application domains such as e-books, digital cameras, Facebook and Twitter. State of the Art in Digital Media and Applications will be invaluable for readers that want a comprehensive look at how emerging digital media technologies are being used, and how they are transforming how we create, consume, exchange and manipulate media content.

Interactive Media written by Roy Rada and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.

This book was written for students and practitioners of engineering and social sciences, including computer, information, communication, library, business, management, and cognitive science. The topic is the relationship between people and interactive media. The book describes individuals, groups, and organizations. An understanding of people is critical to an understanding of the technology which can help people. This book was written with the help of a special computer system for authoring called the Many Using and Creating Hypertext (MUCH) system. Students and researchers from the University of Liverpool contributed to the book through the MUCH system. Classes at the University of Liverpool, both undergraduate classes and master's degree classes, have used various drafts of this book as required reading. The book has been available to the students online via the MUCH system, and the students have provided helpful feedback for the contents of the book. The author is particularly grateful for the contributions of Antonios Michailidis and Alex Birchall. Antonios's influence is most prominent in the chapters on groups, and Alex's, in the latter chapters on organizations. Claude Ghaoui coordinated the book authoring and production team, and Anthony Deakin provided finishing touches.
