The 7th International Conference on Computer Applications in Biotechnology (CAB7) was held in Osaka on May 31- June 4, 1998. CAB7 was the continuation of a successful series of conferences which addressed all major areas in which computers are used to aid process analysis, synthesis, supervision, diagnosis, operation, optimization, control and other biotechnological procedures. Essential bioprocess system engineering aspects ranging from metabolic engineering to the control of bioproduction plants were covered. CAB7 was supported by the International Federation of Automatic Control, the European Federation of Biotechnology, and the Society of Fermentation and Bioengineering, Japan. The scientific program was arranged in several sessions. Titles of the sessions were: Modeling, simulation, design and optimization of bioprocesses; Robotics in biotechnology; Knowledge engineering approaches for bioprocess operation; Computer application in metabolic engineering; Instrumentation and data processing; Cell culture engineering and clinical application; and Application to environmental engineering. Leading international figures in their fields presented papers of the latest information. All papers selected were reviewed with the assistance of the international organizing committee (IPC). In total, 94 high quality papers are complied in this volume.

The ICANNGA series of Conferences has been organised since 1993 and has a long history of promoting the principles and understanding of computational intelligence paradigms within the scientific community and is a reference for established workers in this area. Starting in Innsbruck, in Austria (1993), then to Ales in Prance (1995), Norwich in England (1997), Portoroz in Slovenia (1999), Prague in the Czech Republic (2001) and finally Roanne, in France (2003), the ICANNGA series has established itself for experienced workers in the field. The series has also been of value to young researchers wishing both to extend their knowledge and experience and also to meet internationally renowned experts. The 2005 Conference, the seventh in the ICANNGA series, will take place at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, drawing on the experience of previous events, and following the same general model, combining technical sessions, including plenary lectures by renowned scientists, with tutorials.

The book is intended to present various examples for reactor and process modeling and control as well as for metabolic flux analysis and metabolic design at an ad vanced level. In Part A, General principles and techniques with regard to reactor and process models, process control, and metabolic flux analysis are presented. In addition the accuracy, precision, and reliability of the measured data are discussed which are ex tremely important for process modeling and control. A virtual bioreactor system is presented as well, which can be used for the training of students and operators of industrial plants and for the development of advanced automation tools. In Part B, the General principles are applied for particular bioreactor models. It covers the application of the computational fluiddynamic (CFD) technique to stirred tank and bubble column bioreactors. Different solution methods are presented: the Reynolds-averaging of the turbulent Navier-Stokes equations and modeling of the Reynolds stresses with an appropriate turbulence (k-ee) model, and the Euler (two fluid model), as well as the Euler-Langrange approaches.

Distributed Computer Control Systems 1998 Dccs 98 written by International Federation of Automatic Control and has been published by Pergamon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Computers categories.

Computer control systems are increasingly required to be highly dependable and to have deterministic timing properties. Distributed architectures have the potential to meet this challenge. The advantages of distributed computer control systems include the possibility of composing large systems out of pre-tested components with small integration effort, their well-defined fault containment properties and their capacity to make effective use of mass-produced silicon chips. The IFAC Workshop series on Distributed Computer Control Systems (DCCS) highlights and traces the growth of key concepts in this field at their various stages of development. Theoretical and practice-oriented viewpoints receive equal emphasis and there is a creative blending of the disciplines of computer science and control engineering. The 1998 DCCS Workshop was notable for the attention given to true real-time communication networks and protocols. The complexity of the trade-off between services, dependability mechanisms and system-level properties was highlighted, and rigorous modelling and analysis methodologies were discussed. Event-triggered and time-triggered protocols were contrasted. Models for analysing and predicting response times in distributed systems and for predicting the effect of response-time jitter on the performance of feedback control loops were presented. The application of formal methods to the specification and development of safety-critical control software also received much attention. Distributed object methodologies and object request brokers were also highlighted as being promising approaches for the programming of large-scale, heterogeneous distributed systems. Applications reported included control systems for traffic lights, jet engines, automobiles, fully-automatic trains and flexible manufacturing systems.
