Algorithms and Theory of Computation Handbook, Second Edition in a two volume set, provides an up-to-date compendium of fundamental computer science topics and techniques. It also illustrates how the topics and techniques come together to deliver efficient solutions to important practical problems. New to the Second Edition: Along with updating and revising many of the existing chapters, this second edition contains more than 20 new chapters. This edition now covers external memory, parameterized, self-stabilizing, and pricing algorithms as well as the theories of algorithmic coding, privacy and anonymity, databases, computational games, and communication networks. It also discusses computational topology, computational number theory, natural language processing, and grid computing and explores applications in intensity-modulated radiation therapy, voting, DNA research, systems biology, and financial derivatives. This best-selling handbook continues to help computer professionals and engineers find significant information on various algorithmic topics. The expert contributors clearly define the terminology, present basic results and techniques, and offer a number of current references to the in-depth literature. They also provide a glimpse of the major research issues concerning the relevant topics

Computer Science and Scientific Computing contains the proceedings of the Third ICASE Conference on Scientific Computing held in Williamsburg, Virginia, on April l and 2, 1976, under the auspices of the Institute for Computer Applications in Systems Engineering at the NASA Langley Research Center. The conference provided a forum for reviewing all the aspects of scientific computing and covered topics ranging from computer-aided design (CAD) and computer science technology to the design of large hydrodynamics codes. Case studies in reliable computing are also presented. Comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the use of the hierarchical family concept in the development of scientific programming systems. The discussion then turns to the data structures of scientific computing and their representation and management; some important CAD capabilities required to support aerospace design in the areas of interactive support, information management, and computer hardware advances as well as some computer science developments which may contribute significantly to making such capabilities possible; and the use of symbolic computation systems for problem solving in scientific research. Subsequent chapters deal with computer applications in astrophysics; the possibility of computing turbulence and numerical wind tunnels; and the basis for a general-purpose program for finite element analysis. Software tools for computer graphics are also considered. This monograph will be of value to scientists, systems designers and engineers, and students in computer science who have an interest in the subject of scientific computing.

The 13th Symposium on the Interface continued this series after a one year pause. The objective of these symposia is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas of common concern to computer scientists and statisticians. The sessions of the 13th Symposium were held in the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel, Gateway Center, Pittsburgh. Following established custom the 13th Symposium had organized workshops on various topics of interest to participants. The workshop format allowed the invited speakers to present their material variously as formal talks, tutorial sessions and open discussion. The Symposium schedule was also the customary one. Registration opened in late afternoon of March 11, 1981 and continued during the opening mixer held that evening: The formal opening of the Symposium was on the morning of March 12. The opening remarks were followed by Bradley Efron's address "Statistical Theory and the Computer." The rest of the daily schedule was three concurrent workshops in the morningand three in the afternoon with contributed poster sessions during the noon break. Additionally there were several commercial displays and guided tours of Carnegie-Mellon University's Computer Center, Computer Science research facilities, and Robotics Institute.

This volume contains 11 invited lectures and 42 communications presented at the 13th Conference on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS '88, held at Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia, August 29 - September 2, 1988. Most of the papers present material from the following four fields: - complexity theory, in particular structural complexity, - concurrency and parellelism, - formal language theory, - semantics. Other areas treated in the proceedings include functional programming, inductive syntactical synthesis, unification algorithms, relational databases and incremental attribute evaluation.

This book coherently documents the results and experiences of a major digital library pilot effort, the MeDoc project (Multimedia Electronic Documents). This two-year project was initiated by the German Informatics Society (GI) and involved authors, publishers, librarians, and computer science departments. The prototype distributed digital library system developed during the initiative was operated in a nationwide trial for several months. The book presents the technical and operational results achieved during the project as well as input from foreign digital library activities. Besides professionals active in the area of digital library research and design, this book addresses librarians and others engaged in scientific publishing.

The volume is the outgrowth of a workshop with the same title held at MSRI in the week of November 13-17, 1989, and for those who did not get it, Logic from Computer Science is the converse of Logic in Computer Science, the full name of the highly successful annual LICS conferences. We meant to have a conference which would bring together the LICS commu nity with some of the more traditional "mathematical logicians" and where the emphasis would be on the flow of ideas from computer science to logic rather than the other way around. In a LICS talk, sometimes, the speaker presents a perfectly good theorem about (say) the A-calculus or finite model theory in terms of its potential applications rather than its (often more ob vious) intrinsic, foundational interest and intricate proof. This is not meant to be a criticism; the LICS meetings are, after all, organized by the IEEE Computer Society. We thought, for once, it would be fun to see what we would get if we asked the speakers to emphasize the relevance of their work for logic rather than computer science and to point out what is involved in the proofs. I think, mostly, it worked. In any case, the group of people represented as broad a selection of logicians as I have seen in recent years, and the quality of the talks was (in my view) exceptionally, unusually high. I learned a lot and (I think) others did too.
