Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen, language: English, abstract: The Dotcom bubble, also known as the ‘Internet bubble’ or the ‘Information technology bubble’ was a speculative bubble of stock prices of mainly American Internet companies during the time from 1995 until 2000 when many investors believed that a ‘new era’ was upon them. In only two years, the Internet sector grew over 1000% of its public equity and equalled nearly 6% of the market capitalization of the United States and over 20% of all public traded equity volume in the US. It had its peak on March 10, 2000 with a NASDAQ score of 5,048.62. This period was characterized by lots of establishments of companies in the Internet sector. They were called ‘Dotcom Companies’ because of the ‘.com’ in the end of an URL that comes from the word ‘commercial’. The bubble burst during the years 2000 until 2002 when the NASDAQ lost nearly 80% of its value, many companies like Pets.com failed completely and over $7 trillion in market value were destroyed. With this paper, the author tries to explain the rise and fall of Internet stock prices during that period. For this purpose, the general causes and characteristics of financial bubbles get described before the application to the Dotcom bubble follows. Additionally, some company examples and survivors and losers of the bubble like pets.com, Webvan or Ebay get introduced. Because the bubble mainly took place in the United States, the author will focus on American company examples and the American stock exchange.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1.0, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: The short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman was published in 1892 and is considered to be a very important work of feminist literature. In this paper the short story will be analyzed in regard to the critical theory of feminism. The main part will give special attention to stereotypes of women represented in the story, namely the perfect housewife and the hysterical woman, as well as the traditional gender power structure in the late nineteenth century. However, at the beginning there will be a brief explanation of the aspects of feminism as a critical literary theory. The following part will pay close attention to symbols like the bedroom to demonstrate how they reflect the social and emotional state of the narrator and what they reveal about her defeat or liberation. Additionally, it will illustrate the main characters of the short story, specifically the unknown narrator herself, and which stereotypes of people from the Victorian era they represent. The narrator tells the reader about her life as a wife and mother. She has great problems in fulfilling her duty as a mother because of depression since the birth of her child. The narrator and her husband stay in an old mansion house so that she can recover, but her husband does not really think that she is sick. He leaves her alone almost every day, supposedly because of his work, but this emotional loneliness and the absent of her family and friends, lead her to break down at the end of the story. But is the short story The Yellow Wallpaper really about depression or does it actually reveal something about the woman`s role in society in the late nineteenth century?

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: American Women Writers, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "The Yellow Wallpaper" is an exceptional piece of art by an author who, living at a time that put a heavy weight of social conventions and expectations on women, was trying to undermine these restrictions through sharp analysis of the man-made society surrounding and tying women. Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote a number of short stories, novels and poems all dealing with the situation of women as wives, mothers, workers, artists and individuals. But although the subjects of all her works are critical and particularly provoking for the time, not flattering Gilman with a lot of fame, "The Yellow Wallpaper" is both in style and draft distinctive, more subtle and effective, and it unites her various points of social criticism to a strong attack on a system that ruins female sanity and suppresses female creativity. By the time of its first publication in 1892 it was read as a horror tale, since it contains elements typical for stories in the tradition of Poe, and because of its terrifying impact on the reader. To me a complete misunderstanding of the textual depth and message. But nevertheless the famous sentence in the letter of Horace E. Scudder, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, rejecting the publication in his magazine, shows that there must have been a presentiment of the accusing content and real power of the story. "I could not forgive myself if I made others as miserable as I have made myself " The ignorance from the male-dominated audience of Gilman's time made the publication difficult and even after it was published, it remained widely unnoticed and unprinted until it was reinterpreted by Elaine R. Hedges from a feminist angle in 1973 during the rise of feminist literary criticism. With Hedges interpretatio

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut f r Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Seminar des 2. Studienabschnitts, 40 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper seeks to shed light upon Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892) - a text that has become an American feminist classic and has been interpreted as a 'transformed autobiography' (Shulman, xix), as a 'journalistic/clinical account of a woman's gradual descent into madness' (Bak, 39), and in multiple ways as a 'critique of gender relations' (Shulman, xix). It is a 'bitter story', as Ann J. Lane describes it, 'of a young woman driven to insanity by a loving husband-doctor, who, with the purest motives, imposed Mitchell's "rest cure"' (Lane, vii). The narrator of the story is diagnosed as suffering from a 'temporary nervous depression' (W, 4), which is today known as 'postpartum depression', that is, a depression caused by profound hormonal changes after childbirth. Written some five years after the author herself, following the birth of her first child, became 'a mental wreck' in need of a 'rest cure', "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a fictionalized account of Gilman's own subjection to the rest cure of Silas Weir Mitchell, whose mode of treatment so notoriously typified conventional late Victorian doctoring of women .

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: A, , course: American Literature, language: English, abstract: Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” was first published in the Forerunner, in 1913, and it aroused a lot of controversy among the readers. Those who read the story were totally confused and unable to understand the author’s intentions. As Gilman writes in her essay Why I Wrote “The Yellow Wallpaper” : “[A] Boston physician made protest in the Transcript. Such a story ought not to be written, he said; it was enough to drive anyone mad to read it.” [Gilman 1913:1] Why was the doctor so affected by Gilman’s story? What was so extraordinary about it? First of all, the story was written at the time when women’s roles were solely defined by men. At the beginning of the twentieth century, women were mainly supposed to be devoted to the needs of their families. As stated in The Changing Role of Womanhood: From True Woman to New Woman in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Deborah Thomas, men created: (...) an ideological prison that subjected and silenced women. This ideology, called the Cult of True Womanhood, legitimized the victimization of women. The Cult of Domesticity and the Cult of Purity were the central tenets of the Cult of True Womanhood. [Thomas 1998 :1] Women attempted to reject the traditional model of behaviour their fathers and husbands imposed on them. However, most of their endeavours were doomed to failure. Thomas quotes Welter who states that: “If anyone, male or female, dared to tamper with the complex virtues which made up True Womanhood, he was dammed immediately as the enemy of God, of civilization, and of the Republic.” [Ibid]

This first edition of this book was a broad study, drawing on a wide range of published research and historical evidence, of the enormous stock market boom that started around 1982 and picked up incredible speed after 1995. Although it took as its specific starting point this ongoing boom, it placed it in the context of stock market booms generally, and it also made concrete suggestions regarding policy changes that should be initiated in response to this and other such booms. The book argued that the boom represents a speculative bubble, not grounded in sensible economic fundamentals. Part one of the book considered structural factors behind the boom. A list of twelve precipitating factors that appear to be its ultimate causes was given. Amplification mechanisms, naturally-occurring Ponzi processes, that enlarge the effects of these precipitating factors, were described. Part Two discussed cultural factors, the effects of the news media, and of "new era" economic thinking. Part Three discussed psychological factors, psychological anchors for the market and herd behavior. Part Four discussed attempts to rationalize exuberance: efficient markets theory and theories that investors are learning. Part Five presented policy options and actions that should be taken. The second edition, 2005, added an analysis of the real estate bubble as similar to the stock market bubble that preceded it, and warned that "Significant further rises in these markets could lead, eventually, to even more significant declines. The bad outcome could be that eventual declines would result in a substantial increase in the rate of personal bankruptcies, which could lead to a secondary string of bankruptcies of financial institutions as well. Another long-run consequence could be a decline in consumer and business confidence, and another, possibly worldwide, recession." Thus, the second edition of this book was among the first to warn of the global financial crisis that began with the subprime mortgage debacle in 2007.
