Park, éste es un autor poco citado entre los estudiosos clásicos y actuales de la disciplina de la comunicación. Sin embargo, como se expone en el presente volumen, Park ha de ser considerado como un sociólogo de la comunicación y uno de los pioneros de esta disciplina. El cuerpo de esta obra está compuesto de cuatro partes en las que se examinan los conceptos principales que constituyen la sociología de la comunicación de Park. Tras un primer capítulo destinado a exponer sus influencias intelectuales, se aborda la noción de comunicación. Para este autor, al igual que para su maestro Dewey, la sociedad existe y se mantiene gracias a la comunicación y en ella juega una serie de funciones esenciales. El tercer capítulo versa en torno al concepto de control social. Una de sus formas, la opinión pública, constituye para Park el mecanismo de control fundamental de la sociedad urbana e industrial. En último lugar se consideran la noción de periódico y noticia de este autor.
