Discussing the Million Man March of October 16, 1995 as a turning point in the history of African American protest, this volume offers five interpretive contexts to demarcate its cultural location: The March is analyzed as a struggle within the African American political establishment (1), as an attempt at unified black action against a new politics of white resentment (2), and as the Nation of Islam's (NOI) most visible self-dramatization since its founding in the 1930s (3). Relying on these themes, a rhetorical analysis of Louis Farrakhan's speech at the March uncovers the NOI's uneasy yet intimate relationship with the rituals of American civil religion (4). Finally, Con/Tradition addresses Farrakhan's influence on black HipHop culture and academic Afrocentrism (5).

Western perceptions of the East have been shaped by and large within the framework Western social sciences have drawn. The dress sewn for the Western context did not fit the Muslim world and social movements therein; however, social analysts work on the same model in their efforts to understand the East. The Gulen movement, which flourished first in the "East" but now spread across a hundred countries, is not immune from such a bias. This book on the Gulen movement is an effort to deconstruct this bias and the author points to a need for a comprehensive look on Muslim social movements. The author scholarly treats the Gulen movement in cultural, sociological, and religious standpoints, while laying out the main concepts he finds relevant with the movement's far-reaching spread across the world. As concisely phrased in the title, the Gulen case is an interesting encounter of the "tradition" and "modernity" both in the person of Fethullah Gulen and in the education and dialogue initiatives of the movement. The author sees in Gulen an embodiment of wisdom that peacefully harmonizes the benefits of the modern age and the heritage of a long past. Book jacket.

This dissertation reevaluates the tradition of Jesus' sayings in the Apostolic Fathers in light of the growing recognition of the impact of orality upon early Christianity and its writings. At the beginning of the last century it was common to hold that the Apostolic Fathers made wide use of the canonical Gospels. While a number of studies have since called this view into question, many of them simply replace the theory of dependence upon canonical Gospels with one of dependence upon other written sources. No full-scale study of Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers has been published which takes into account the last four decades of new research into oral tradition in the wake of the pioneering work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. Based on this new research, the present dissertation advances the thesis that an oral-traditional source best explains the form and content of the explicit appeals to Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers that predate 2 Clement. In the course of the discussion, attention is drawn to the ways in which the Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers informs our understanding of the use of oral tradition in Christian antiquity.

The traditions about Jesus and his teaching circulated in oral form for many years, continuing to do so for decades following the writing of the New Testament Gospels. James Dunn is one of the major voices urging that more consideration needs to be given to the oral use and transmission of the Jesus tradition as a major factor in giving the Synoptic tradition its enduring character.

Lindeman, a musicologist, traces and defines the historical development of the concerto form as it passed from Mozart to succeeding generations. He then assesses Beethoven's contributions, and examines the classical model of the form in the early 19th century by overviewing several early romantic composers' works. Subsequent chapters analyze and assess the responses of five precursers of Schumann, whose work offers a synthesis of radical experiments and traditional tenets. He concludes by suggesting that concertos of Lizst offer a road into further developments of the genre in the second half of the century. Illustrated with bandw portraits of composers and excerpts from musical scores. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Human Tradition In Latin America written by William H. Beezley and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with History categories.

This unique collection emphasizes the human element in the study of Latin American history by focusing on the lives of twenty-three men, women, and children. Though they differ widely from each other in background and circumstance, these individuals share a common experience: all are caught up in some way by the profound, sometimes devastating, changes that accompany the modernization of a traditional society. Their stories bring vividly to life the impact that revolution, economic upheaval, urbanization, destruction of community life, and the disruption of family and gender roles have on ordinary people. These studies also bring out the various ways, often creative and courageous, in which Latin Americans have coped with the fortunes and vicissitudes of 'progress.'

Israelis And The Jewish Tradition written by David Hartman and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-01 with History categories.

divdivIn this powerful book one of the most important Jewish thinkers in the world today grapples with issues that increasingly divide Israel’s secular Jewish community from its religious Zionists. Addressing the concerns of both communities from the point of view of one who is deeply committed to religious pluralism, David Hartman suggests a more inclusive and inviting framework for the modern Israeli engagement of the Jewish tradition. He offers a new understanding of what it means to be Jewish—one which is neither assimilationist nor backward-looking, and one that enables different Jewish groups to celebrate their own traditions without demonizing or patronizing others. In a world polarized between religious and secular and caught within a sectarian denominationalism, Hartman shows the way to build bridges of understanding. The book explores the philosophies of two major Jewish thinkers of the Middle Ages, Yehuda Halevi and Moses Maimonides. A careful analysis of Maimonides’ approach to Judaism shows that messianism is not the predominant organizing principle that makes Judaism intelligible and significant, Hartman contends. He argues against Halevi’s triumphalism and in favor of using the Sinai covenant for evaluating the religious significance of Israel, for this approach gives meaning to Zionists’ religious commitments while also empowering secular Israelis to reengage with the Jewish tradition. /DIV/DIV
