Projects and dialogues in homage to the influential New York architect and educator Combining civic architecture projects with contributions by writers, historians and artists ranging from Dan Graham to Fran Lebowitz, Conceiving the Planconstructs a dialogue with the legacy of the late architect and longtime Cooper Union professor Diane Lewis (1951-2017). Lewis' pedagogy defined Cooper Union's architecture departure from the 1970s to the mid-2000s. Here, architectural historians Barry Bergdoll and Daniel Sherer converse about the themes and approach in her pedagogical style and thinking. Architects, former students, colleagues and friends generate projects as a continuous discourse with Lewis' pedagogy, carrying her legacy into contemporary dialogues. Conceiving the Planincludes more than 250 images and diagrams of projects pertaining to Lewis' legacy by Georg Windeck, Preston Scott Cohen, Dorian Wiszniewski, Pippo Ciorra and Peter Lynch.

The Return of Nature asks you to critique your conception of nature and your approach to architectural sustainability and green design. What do the terms mean? Are they de facto design requirements? Or are they unintended design replacements? The book is divided into five parts giving you multiple viewpoints on the role of the relations between architecture, nature, technology, and culture. A detailed case study of a built project concludes each part to help you translate theory into practice. This holistic approach will allow you to formulate your own theory and to adjust your practice based on your findings. Will you provoke change, design architecture that responds to change, or both? Coedited by an architect and a historian, the book features new essays by Robert Levit, Catherine Ingraham, Sylvia Lavin, Barry Bergdoll, K. Michael Hays, Diane Lewis, Andrew Payne, Mark Jarzombek, Jean-Francois Chevrier, Elizabeth Diller, Antoine Picon, and Jorge Silvetti. Five case studies document the work of MOS Architects, Michael Bell Architecture, Steven Holl Architects, George L. Legendre, and Preston Scott Cohen.

She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Black Reconstruction In America The Oxford W E B Du Bois written by W. E. B. Du Bois and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-01 with History categories.

W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history. Black Reconstruction in America tells and interprets the story of the twenty years of Reconstruction from the point of view of newly liberated African Americans. Though lambasted by critics at the time of its publication in 1935, Black Reconstruction has only grown in historical and literary importance. In the 1960s it joined the canon of the most influential revisionist historical works. Its greatest achievement is weaving a credible, lyrical historical narrative of the hostile and politically fraught years of 1860-1880 with a powerful critical analysis of the harmful effects of democracy, including Jim Crow laws and other injustices. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by David Levering Lewis, this edition is essential for anyone interested in African American history.
