First published in 2006. This work represents an attempt to synthesise studies on the development of perception which Piaget started twenty or so years ago, when the Faculte des Sciences de Geneve appointed him to the Chair of Experimental Psychology and Director of the Psychological Laboratory. Most of the studies to be reported have already appeared in the Archives de Psychologie under the general title of Recherches sur Ie Developpement des Perceptions, however, more than fifteen studies which have not been published and which we shall deal with in the following pages.

The book deals with two focal issues: 1. The structural rules according to which information is organized in perception (Part I). 2. The rules on how pieces of information are integrated and transformed into judgements (Part II). Included in Part I are theories on neural mechanisms and models linking perception and memory. Part II refers to simple physical and complex semantic dimensions. Antecedents in animal behaviour are explored too. The book is intended for a broad readership; it should stimulate research which will link topics that have been traditionally separated. Features of the book are: - a synopsis of discrete, structural and quantitative aspects of perception linking perception with higher cognition and memory. - an overview on new approaches and findings from East and West on perceptual organization and rules inherent to judgement. - the chapters are strongly interconnected and didactical in tone. Introductions are designed to increase readability of the work.

Oculomotor Systems And Perception written by Sheldon M. Ebenholtz and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-22 with Medical categories.

Oculomotor systems that regulate eye movements play an important role in accounting for certain qualities of visual experience. They are implicated in a wide array of perceptual topics, from apparent size, depth, and distance, to apparent slant and vertical orientation. This text emphasizes the role of oculomotor systems in perception, and discusses the basic characteristics of such oculomotor systems as those controlling vergence, pursuit, the vestibulo-ocular response, and saccadic eye movements. This volume introduces fundamental concepts in physiological optics, and explores the mechanisms of perception, with a focus on eye movements and the diverse implications of oculomotor research.

This book defines the terminology used in the fields of sensation and perception and describes the biological and physical bases required for understanding sensory experiences. It offers more specifically an introduction to the study of psychophysics, auditory perception, visual perception, and attention, and discusses the basic concepts and mechanisms used to interpret different perceptual phenomena. Featured topics in this book: Laws of psychophysics, including the discrimination law of Weber and Stevens’ power law. Psychophysical methods and signal detection theory. Hearing music and speech. Color, form and depth perception The role of attention in perception. Sensory disorders. Psychology of Perception is an essential resource for undergraduate and graduate students interested in studying sensation and perception.

Sensory Perception written by Friedrich G. Barth and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with Medical categories.

Sensory perception: mind and matter aims at a deeper understanding of the many facets of sensory perception and their relations to brain function and cognition. It is an attempt to promote the interdisciplinary discourse between the neurosciences and psychology, which speaks the language of cognitive experiences, and philosophy, which has been thinking about the meaning and origin of consciousness since its beginning. Leading experts contribute to such a discourse by informing the reader about exciting modern developments, both technical and conceptual, and by pointing to the big gaps still to be bridged. The various chapters provide access to scientific research on sensory perception and the mind from a broad perspective, covering a large spectrum of topics which range from the molecular mechanisms at work in sensory cells to the study of the unconscious and to neurophilosophy.

Perception is the first step in the whole of the cognitive processes (attention, learning, memory, categorization, imagery, intuition, inference, comprehension, thought, judgement, expression) which culminate in the reasoning activity and to which emotions make a contribution. The production of perception representations is correlated with the perception events. Such perception representations occur by means of the contribution of two kinds of factors: sensory signals which reproduce the spatio-temporal characteristics of the receptor modifications, and interpretation of the intrinsic ambiguity of such signals by means of unconscious inferences. Various interactions intervene between bottom-up signals from peripheral receptors and top-down signals from higher centres.

Fundamentals Of Sensory Perception written by Avijit Chaudhuri and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Perception categories.

This comprehensive introduction to the senses explains how physical stimuli are transformed into signals in the nervous system and how the brain uses those signals to understand the world. Whereas most texts in the field begin by covering vision, this trailblazing work offers students a solid grounding in the principles of perceptual measurement and the biological mechanisms that make perception possible before introducing the somatosensory and olfactory systems. This innovative presentation ensures that students have a firm grasp of the basics before they approach the complexities of hearing and vision. Written specifically for students encountering the discipline for the first time, Fundamentals of Sensory Perception is a cutting-edge introduction to sensation and perception. Features * Unique and accessible organization. Opening chapters explore touch and the chemical senses before moving on to auditory systems and vision. This structure allows students to gradually build their knowledge about sensation and perception before tackling more complex and challenging concepts. * Comprehensible. The language and tone throughout are suitable for introductory perception students. * Authoritative. Avi Chaudhuri has taught widely in both Canada and the United States over the past 30 years and his vast experience in both education and research is reflected in the text, making this an indispensable introduction to the field. * Balanced coverage of classic and contemporary material. The most current research, references, and examples have been integrated into a historical narrative that tells the story of how important concepts were discovered, offering students the perfect mix of classic content and cutting-edge information. * An abundance of figures and illustrations. With 356 figures, 24 tables, and 130 photos, this text offers the most brilliant art program currently available. Each figure and illustration has been carefully selected to ensure it best represents crucial subject matter. * Extensive box program. Engaging boxes are integrated throughout to pique student interest and provide additional information. - Portraits and Side notes identify key figures, essential theories, and noteworthy topics from the history of perceptual research. - Investigation boxes provide suggestions for fun, easy-to-conduct experiments. - Methodology boxes focus on specific research projects--past and present--that demonstrate how the principles discussed in the text can be put into practice. * Engaging pedagogy. Chapter openers, review questions, bulleted summaries, suggestions for further reading, lists of key terms, and a glossary give students the tools required to be successful in their studies. * Vibrant. Full-color design throughout brings concepts to life.
