Excerpt from Concerning Portraits and Portraiture I once heard a conversation between two painters of portraits. One of them said "When I have a sitter I think to myself, 'this is just one of the great human family,' so I make a general representation of a human being, and then add so much of individual peculiarity as is needed to make the picture recognizable as a portrait." The other painter said "My first thought is of the extraordinary peculiarities of this face and figure that I am about to paint. I notice how long the nose is, how wide apart the eyes, how firm the mouth, how drooping the shoulders, etc. These eccentricities appear so piquant and novel, they absorb me so deeply in the effort to seize and reproduce them, that I have to force myself to generalize and soften the effort, for fear of making a caricature." In these two painters we have clearly marked types of two ways of looking at portraiture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This work examines the effect of the French Revolution on portrait painting. Portraits were the most widely commissioned paintings in 18th-century France. But most portraits were produced for private consumptions, and were therefore seen as inferior to art designed for public exhibition. The Revolution endowed private values with an inprecedented significance, and the way people responded to portraits changed as a result.

Portraiture written by Shearer West and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-08 with Art categories.

This fascinating new book explores the world of portraiture from a number of vantage points, and asks key questions about its nature. How has portraiture changed over the centuries? How have portraits represented their subjects, and how have they been interpreted? Issues of identity, modernity, and gender are considered within a cultural and historical context. Shearer West uncovers much intriguing detail about a genre that has often been seen as purely representational, featuring examples from African tribes to Renaissance princes, and from 'stars' such as David and Victoria Beckham to ordinary people. In the process, she shows us how to communicate with the past in an exciting new way.

Portraiture written by Richard Brilliant and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-15 with Art categories.

This is the first general and theoretical study devoted entirely to portraiture. Drawing on a broad range of images from Antiquity to the twentieth century, which includes paintings, sculptures, prints, cartoons, postage stamps, medals, documents and photographs, Richard Brilliant investigates the genre as a particular phenomenon in Western art that is especially sensitive to changes in the perceived nature of the individual in society. The author's argument on behalf of portraiture (and he draws on examples by such artists as Botticelli, Rembrandt, Matisse, Warhol and Hockney) does not comprise a mere survey of the genre, nor is it a straightforward history of its reception. Instead, Brilliant presents a thematic and cogent analysis of the connections between the subject-matter of portraits and the beholder's response – the response he or she makes to the image itself and to the person it represents. Portraiture's extraordinary longevity and resilience as a genre is a testament to the power of this imaginative transaction between the subject, the artist and the beholder.

Eye To I written by National Portrait Gallery (Smithsonian Institution) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Self-portraits categories.

This richly illustrated book features an introduction by the National Portrait Gallery's chief curator and nearly 150 insightful entries on key self-portraits in the museum's collection. "Eye to I" provides readers with an overview of self-portraiture while revealing the intersections that exist between art, life, and self-representation. Drawing primarily from the museum's collection, "Eye to I" explores how American artists have portrayed themselves since 1900. The book shows that while each individual's approach to self-portraiture arises under unique circumstances, all of their representations raise important questions about self-perception and self-reflection. Sometimes artists choose to reveal intimate details of their inner lives. Other times they use the genre to obfuscate their true selves or invent alter egos. Today, with the proliferation of selfies and the contemporary focus on identity, it is time to reassess the significance of the self-portrait. Exhibition: National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C., USA (02.11.2018-18.28.2019).
