Filling an important gap in scholarship, Professor Cowden's new bibliography provides complete and authoritative information on major conductors of permanent orchestral ensembles since the time of von Weber and Berlioz. Cowden has selected 1,249 conductors on the basis of citations in standard music references, biographical studies, autobiographies, and contributions to the pedagogy of conducting. Publications in English and several European languages are cited. The first section, Collective Works, gives detailed information on titles devoted to concert and opera conductors and related titles containing additional material on conductors and conducting. The section on individual conductors is arranged alphabetically by artist. Further sources and references are offered in appendixes and an index of authors is included.

Conducting Favourite Concert Pieces written by Norman Del Mar and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Conducting categories.

This collection of essays on the interpretation of twenty-two unusual concert pieces was assembled partly with a view to more imaginative program planning. There are many composers who may have written only one or two masterpieces, yet failed to leave a worthy oeuvre; these sadly are often forgotten or overlooked when conductors assemble programs. This compilation spans a little over a hundred years from the 19th and 20th centuries and all the works are colorful and attractive. Once again Norman Del Mar brings his expertise in handling the orchestra to a wide variety of styles. His infectious enthusiasm and broad knowledge make him an invaluable guide to the aspiring conductor, the expert, and the music-loving listener. The essays range from Russia to Spain, from Schoenberg to Kodály, from Wolf to Poulenc, with such established favorites as the overture to La Forza del Destino with its unexpected tricky moments and the Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes for which Del Mar offers suggestions from Britten himself, with whom he worked for many years.

Corresponding With Carlos written by Charles Barber and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-30 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004) was the greatest conductor of his generation. His reputation is legendary, and yet astonishingly, in his five decades on the podium, he conducted only 89 concerts, some 600 opera performances, and produced 12 recordings. How did someone who worked so little compared to his peers achieve so much? Between his relatively small output and well-known aversion to publicity, many came to regard Kleiber as reclusive and remote, bordering on unapproachable. But in 1989 a conducting student at Stanford University wrote him a letter, and an unusual thing occurred: the world-renowned conductor replied. And so began a 15-year correspondence, study, and friendship by mail. Drawing heavily on this decade-and-a-half exchange, Corresponding with Carlos is the first English-language biography of Kleiber ever written. Charles Barber offers unique insights into how Kleiber worked based on their long and detailed correspondence. This biography by one friend of another considers, among other matters, Kleiber's singular aesthetic, his playful and often erudite sense of humor, his reputation for perfectionism, his much-studied baton technique, and the famous concert and opera performances he conducted. Comic and compelling, Corresponding with Carlos explores the great conductor's musical lineage and the contemporary contexts in which he worked. It repudiates myths that inevitably crop up around genius and reflects on Kleiber's contribution to modern musical performance. This biography is ideal for musicians, scholars, and anyone with a special love of the great classical music tradition.

George Szell written by Michael Charry and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This book is the first full biography of George Szell, one of the greatest orchestra and opera conductors of the twentieth century. From child prodigy pianist and composer to world-renowned conductor, Szell's career spanned seven decades, and he led most of the great orchestras and opera companies of the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the NBC and Chicago Symphonies, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and Opera, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. A protégé of composer-conductor Richard Strauss at the Berlin State Opera, his crowning achievement was his twenty-four-year tenure as musical director of the Cleveland Orchestra, transforming it into one of the world's greatest ensembles, touring triumphantly in the United States, Europe, the Soviet Union, South Korea, and Japan. Michael Charry, a conductor who worked with Szell and interviewed him, his family, and his associates over several decades, draws on this first-hand material and correspondence, orchestra records, reviews, and other archival sources to construct a lively and balanced portrait of Szell's life and work from his birth in 1897 in Budapest to his death in 1970 in Cleveland. Readers will follow Szell from his career in Europe, Great Britain, and Australia to his guest conducting at the New York Philharmonic and his distinguished tenure at the Metropolitan Opera and Cleveland Orchestra. Charry details Szell's personal and musical qualities, his recordings and broadcast concerts, his approach to the great works of the orchestral repertoire, and his famous orchestrational changes and interpretation of the symphonies of Robert Schumann. The book also lists Szell's conducting repertoire and includes a comprehensive discography. In highlighting Szell's legacy as a teacher and mentor as well as his contributions to orchestral and opera history, this biography will be of lasting interest to concert-goers, music lovers, conductors, musicians inspired by Szell's many great performances, and new generations who will come to know those performances through Szell's recorded legacy.
