Premature deterioration of concrete at the joints in concrete pavements and parking lots has been reported across the northern states. The distress may first appear as shadowing when microcracking near the joints traps water, or as cracks parallel to and about 1 inch from the saw cut. The distress later exhibits as a significant loss of material. Not all roadways are distressed, but the problem is common enough to warrant attention. The aim of the work being conducted under this and parallel contracts was to improve understanding of the mechanisms behind premature joint deterioration and, based on this understanding, develop training materials and guidance documents to help practitioners reduce the risk of further distress and provide guidelines for repair techniques. While work is still needed to understand all of the details of the mechanisms behind premature deterioration and the prevention of further distress, the work in this report has contributed to advancing the state of the knowledge.

Distress has recently been observed in the joints of some concrete pavements, primarily in the wet-freeze states. This distress often begins in longitudinal joints, followed by transverse joints and results in the significant loss of material from the joint area. Although it may only affect approximately 10% of the concrete pavements system-wide, it greatly reduces the service life and increases maintenance costs of the pavements it effects. Primary issues that emerged from studies on this phenomenon include the importance of the timing of joint sawing, the width of the joint opening, degree of concrete or joint sealing, drainage and degree of saturation of the concrete at the joint, quality of the air void system, role of deicing chemicals, quality of curing, and the degree of restraint at the joint. Although this broad collection of issues implies that we still lack complete understanding of all causes of joint deterioration, it also makes it pretty clear that the observed damage is a result of combination of several factors. This study synthesizes completed research related to concrete pavements joint deterioration and provides information to advance the knowledge and understanding of the variables involved in in this deterioration process and suggests the best practices that can lead to its reduction or mitigation.

The objective of this research was to assess the efficacy of various waterproofing sealers applied to pavement joints with respect to limiting water ingress. The measure of water ingress was the chloride concentration profile as measured by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The fieldwork was conducted at the MnROAD facility. Cores were retrieved from pavements to assess the before condition. Various silane- and siloxane-based sealers were applied in 2013, and the pavements were exposed to service for two years. After two years, cores were retrieved. The chloride profiles for various pavement sites were compared before and after application of the sealer. No appreciable differences were noted. The lack of measured differences is attributed to the short time span allowed for ingress. The older pavements measured had a considerable degree of chloride ingress and, as such, small changes were difficult to detect. The newer pavement analyzed also showed no appreciable change, but it would be worth re-analyzing after more time has elapsed (e.g., two more years).

Some of the Indiana concrete pavements constructed within the last 10-20 years have shown signs of premature deterioration, especially in the areas adjacent to the longitudinal and transverse joints. This deterioration typically manifested itself as cracking and spalling of concrete combined with the loss of material in the direct vicinity of the joint. In addition, in some cases "bulb-shaped" damage zones were also observed under the sealed parts of the joints. The objective of this study was to investigate possible causes of this premature deterioration. To reach this objective, the characteristics of the concrete in and near the deteriorated joints were compared and contrasted to the concrete characteristics in the non-deteriorated sections of pavement. The study was conducted in two different phases (Phase I and Phase II), and the findings are presented as a two-part report. The investigation started with a detailed inventory of selected areas of affected pavements in order to identify and classify the existing types of distresses and select locations for collection of the cores. During the Phase I of the study a total of 36 concrete cores were extracted from 5 different pavements.. During Phase II of the study a total of 18 cores were retrieved from five different pavement sections and subject to examination. The cores were subjected to eighth different tests: air-void system determination, Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, sorptivity test, freeze-thaw & resonance frequency test, resistance to chloride ion penetration (RCP) test and chloride profile (concentration) determination. The test results identified several cases of in-filling of the air voids (especially smaller air bubbles) with secondary deposits. These deposits were most likely the result of the repetitive saturation of air voids with water and substantially reduced the effectiveness of the air voids system with respect to providing an adequate level of freeze-thaw protection. Specifically, it was observed that the existing air void system in the concrete from panels near the deteriorated longitudinal joint had neither spacing factors nor specific surface values within the range recommended for freeze-thaw durability. Contrary to this, nearly all the concrete in lanes without damage had an adequate air void system at the time of sampling. In addition, the affected concrete often displayed an extensive network of microcracks, had higher rates of absorption and reduced ability to resist chloride ions penetration. From the observation of the drains performed using the remote camera it was obvious that not all the drains were functioning properly and some were entirely blocked. However, more precise or direct correlations could not be made between the conditions of the drains and observed pavement performance.

Because of widespread disagreement about the desirability of expansion joints in concrete pavements, the Public Roads Administration (PRA) decided early in 1940 to sponsor cooperative experimental research projects in Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, California and Missouri. Design of the seven experimental sections in each state is described. The primary purpose of the experiments is to study the spacing of expansion joints in pavements with closely spaced contraction joints.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate factors influencing the durability of the joints in portland cement concrete pavement in the state of Indiana. The scope of the research included the evaluation of the absorption of water in concrete, the absorption of deicing solutions in concrete, the relationship between the degree of saturation and concrete deterioration, and the role of Soy Mehyl Esters (SME) as a potential concrete sealant. The aforementioned items were studied in conjunction with the observation of premature joint deterioration in concrete pavements. Previous work by the PI identified that deteriorating joints were observed to frequently have standing water and damaged joint sealant. This work was conducted to better understand the potential mechanisms responsible for joint deterioration, a series of mortars were tested that are consistent with the mortar fraction of concrete paving mixtures. The first portion of the work examined the role of deicing salt solutions on the wetting and drying behavior of concrete elements. The second portion of the work examined the concept of the degree of fluid saturation and its relationship with freeze-thaw damage. The final portion of the work examined the potential use of penetrating concrete sealers (like soy methyl esters) to reduce water absorption and the corresponding freeze-thaw damage.
