This book, on the basis of a generalization and critical analysis of materials on constructed concrete dams, accumulated experience in their operation, and current trends, considers a set of problems associated with the design and construction of concrete dams. The modern principles of designing gravity and arch dams and the main provisions of the calculation justification of their reliability in comparison with US standards are outlined. Great attention has been paid to rolled concrete dams, taking into account their specific characteristics. Ways of increasing the efficiency of dams through the improvement of layout and structural solutions, calculation methods, and a more complete consideration of the features of natural conditions are considered. The book presents and analyzes the designs of erected concrete dams, which allows for a better understanding of the approaches and decision-making principles for designing dams, taking into account the specifics of natural, construction, and other conditions, and also analyzes a number of new solutions that reflect the various ways that engineering theory and practice has sought further improvement of concrete dams. This work will be useful to hydraulic engineers and professionals involved in the design, construction, and operation of concrete dams, as well as in settlement studies. The book will also be of interest to academics and can be used as a textbook by university students specializing in hydraulic engineering.

The Bureau is currently in the processes of rewriting criteria and preparing designs standards and guidelines for concrete dams. The large thick books, Design of Arch Dams, Design of gravity Dams, and Designs of Small Dams, are to become Design Standards. We are going to put out a standard for everything. The Bureau and others have similar criteria for retaining walls, that is, a safety factor of 1-1/2. The training walls and channel floor are all self-contained. So far as concrete structures are concerned, the following comments will address mainly concrete dams. The Bureau has about 55 concrete dams of which 28 are arch. For concrete dams, we have basically four types of structures, arch or gravity, and new or existing structures. The criteria differs somewhat for each one. An extensive discussion will not be presented about United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) arch dams except to show their influence on the design and analyses of gravity dams using those concepts. From the structural analysis of arch dams, the designer becomes very cognizant of three-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic structures.

Developments in Geotechnical Engineering 6: Dams, Dam Foundations, and Reservoir Sites explores the design and construction of dams and reservoirs, and the foundations on which they rest. It discusses the theory and practice of geology and geophysics as they are applied to the study of proposed sites on which to build dams and reservoirs, the measures taken to ensure the continued safety of a dam during construction, and geological processes and features of foundations. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the geotechnical aspects of planning and construction of dams and reservoirs, along with the origin, nature, and magnitude of problems associated with the foundation materials to be used. It then looks at the geological classification of natural substances and the strengths of these substances in terms of their origin, fabric, and mineralogy; excavation and filling of valleys; the influence of geologic structure in the development of erosional and depositional features in valleys; and the flow of water (seepage) beneath dams and around abutments. The reader is also introduced to groundwater hydrology as it relates to the movement of water through anisotropic materials beneath standing or running bodies of water at the Earth's surface and beneath dams; the mechanics of dam foundations; and excavations and dam construction in unconsolidated deposits. This book will be of interest to geologists, geophysicists, and engineers, as well as those involved in hydrology, geosciences, and rock and soil mechanics.
