Le langage, élément central du système de Condillac, ne se comprend réellement qu'au regard de la thématique de l'action, à partir de laquelle il est possible de redonner à toute œuvre sa véritable unité. L'abbé s'efforce, dans sa relecture de Locke, de montrer comment la liberté, n'est, dans les faits, que dans l'usage volontaire que nous faisons des signes, lorsque nous lions nos idées. Par l'analyse, les signes du langage permettent de subordonner le désir, à l'origine de nos facultés, à la faculté suprême : la raison. Morale et politique sont, dans le domaine individuel et dans le domaine collectif, l'expression de la même exigence de cette connaissance claire de l'homme qui, partant de l'entendement humain tel seulement qu'il nous apparaît, ne saurait prétendre retomber dans les errements de l'ancienne métaphysique et de l'esprit de système. Dépassant l'opposition cartésienne du corps et de l'âme, l'empirisme de Condillac se construit contre le matérialisme qui peut en être la conséquence. Repensant la relation de l'âme et du corps, le philosophe montre que sensualisme et nature spirituelle de l'âme coexistent dans une réflexion sur l'homme débarassée de tout dogmatisme. L'œuvre de Condillac fera l'objet dès lors d'interprétations souvent contradictoires : tour à tour suspectée de toucher au matérialisme et plus rarement au spiritualisme, elle finira par tomber dans un injuste oubli, dépassée par des disciplines nouvelles (philosophies du langage, de l'action) qu'elle contribuera à annoncer.

Throughout the nineteenth century, German philosophy was haunted by the specter of the French Revolution. Kant, Hegel and their followers spent their lives wrestling with its heritage, trying to imagine a specifically German path to modernity: a “revolution without revolution.” Trapped in a politically ossified society, German intellectuals were driven to brood over the nature of the revolutionary experience. In this ambitious and original study, Stathis Kouvelakis paints a rich panorama of the key intellectual and political figures in the effervescence of German thought before the 1848 revolutions. He shows how the attempt to chart a moderate, reformist path entered into crisis, generating two antagonistic perspectives within the progressive currents of German society. On the one side were those socialists—among them Moses Hess and the young Friedrich Engels—who sought to discover a principle of harmony in social relations, bypassing the question of revolutionary politics. On the other side, the poet Heinrich Heine and the young Karl Marx developed a new perspective, articulating revolutionary rupture, proletarian hegemony and struggle for democracy, thereby redefining the very notion of politics itself.
