There is an intimate relation between all aspects of the solar activity and the presence of solar magnetic fields. Observations showed that the magnetic field at the photospheric level consists of magnetic flux tubes, which are located at supergranule boundaries. The flux tubes interact with the solar granulation and convection and, as a result, longitudinal, transverse and torsional magnetic tube waves are generated. These waves are responsible for carrying the energy to the upper parts of the solar atmosphere and heating the atmosphere to temperatures much higher than the solar photosphere. The energy carried by transverse and torsional waves may also play a dominant role in acceleration of the solar wind. It is important to determine the propagation conditions for all three types of magnetic tube waves. The main purpose of analytical studies performed in this thesis is to derive cutoff frequencies for the waves propagating along thin and vertically oriented magnetic flux tubes, and to determine the range of frequencies corresponding to propagating and evanescent waves under the solar conditions. Among new results obtained in this thesis is an alternative much simpler approach to derive the transverse wave equation, the derivation of the wave equation for torsional waves propagating along different parts of exponentially diverging flux tubes, and the cutoff frequencies for torsional waves.

Solar magnetic flux tubes support three fundamental modes: longitudinal, transverse and torsional tube waves. Previous studies showed that the propagation of longitudinal and transverse waves along thin and isothermal magnetic flux tubes is affected by the cutoff frequency, which are global quantities that restricts the wave propagation to only those frequencies that are higher than the cutoff. It was also demonstrated that the tubes respond to freely propagating longitudinal and transverse tube waves by oscillating at the corresponding cutoff frequency. No cutoff frequency was found for torsional waves propagating along thin and isothermal magnetic flux tubes. Since the solar atmosphere is not isothermal, the effects of different temperature gradients on the cutoff for transverse tube waves are investigated. It is shown that this cutoff frequency becomes a local quantity and its physical meaning is different than the global cutoff. The obtained results are used to explain the observed frequencies of oscillations of solar magnetic flux tubes.

This book presents the physics of magnetic flux tubes, including their fundamental properties and collective phenomena in an ensemble of flux tubes. The physics of magnetic flux tubes is vital for understanding fundamental processes in the solar atmosphere that are shaped and governed by magnetic fields. The concept of magnetic flux tubes is also central to various magnetized media ranging from laboratory plasma and Earth's magnetosphere to planetary, stellar and galactic environments. The book covers both theory and observations. Theoretical models presented in analytical and phenomenological forms that are tailored to practical applications. These are welded together with empirical data extending from the early pioneering observations to the most recent state-of-the-art data. This new edition of the book is updated and contains a significant amount of new material throughout as well as four new chapters and 48 problems with solutions. Most problems make use of original papers containing fundamental results. This way, the original paper, often based on complex theory, turns into a convenient tool for practical use and quantitative analysis.

Solar and stellar photospheres constitute the layers most accessible to observations, forming the interface between the interior and the outside of the stars. The solar atmosphere is a rich physics laboratory, in which the whole spectrum of radiative, dynamical, and magnetic processes that tranfer energy into space can be observed. As the fundamental processes take place on very small spatial scales, we need high· resolution observations to explore them. On the other hand the small-scale processes act together to form global properties of the sun, which have their origins in the solar interior. The rapid advances in observational techniques and theoreticallllodelling over the past decade made it very timely to bring together scientists from east and west to the first lAU Symposium on this topic. The physics of the photosphere involves complicated interactions between magnetic fields, convection, waves, and radiation. During the past decade our understanding of these gener ally small-scale structures and processes has been dramatically advanced. New instrumen tations, on ground and in space, have given us new means to study the granular convection. Diagnostic methods in Stokes polarimetry have allowed us to go beyond the limitations of spatial resolution to explore the structure and dynamics of the subarcsec magnetic struc tures. Extensive numerical simulations of the interaction between convection and magnetic fields using powerful supercomputers are providing deepened physical insight. Granulation, magnetic fields, and dynamo processes are being explored in the photospheres of other stars, guided by our improved understanding of the solar photosphere.

Nonlinear dynamo theory is central to understanding the magnetic structures of planets, stars and galaxies. In chapters contributed by some of the leading scientists in the field, this text explores some of the recent advances in the field. Both kinetic and dynamic approaches to the subject are considered, including fast dynamos, topological methods in dynamo theory, physics of the solar cycle and the fundamentals of mean field dynamo. Advances in Nonlinear Dynamos is ideal for graduate students and researchers in theoretical astrophysics and applied mathematics, particularly those interested in cosmic magnetism and related topics, such as turbulence, convection, and more general nonlinear physics.
