An award-winning history of the U.S. Public Health Service’s haphazard efforts to educate Americans about sex for more than a century. Since launching its first sex ed program during World War I, the Public Health Service has dominated federal sex education efforts. Alexandra M. Lord draws on medical research, news reports, the expansive records of the Public Health Service, and interviews with former surgeons general to examine these efforts, from early initiatives through the administration of George W. Bush. Giving equal voice to many groups in America—middle class, working class, black, white, urban, rural, Christian and non-Christian, scientist and theologian—Lord explores how federal officials struggled to create sex education programs that balanced cultural and public health concerns. She details how the Public Health Service left an indelible mark on federally and privately funded sex education programs through partnerships and initiatives with community organizations, public schools, foundations, corporations, and religious groups. With engaging and insightful analysis, Lord explains how tensions among these organizations exacerbated existing controversies about sexual behavior. She also discusses why the Public Health Service’s promotional tactics sometimes fueled public fears about the federal government’s goals in promoting, or not promoting, sex education. In the last decade of the twentieth century, the «safe sex» message - advocating the use of condoms to prevent pregnancy and curb the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases - has endured relentless attacks by conservative religious groups who seek to instill doubt and promote an abstinence-only theme in American public schools. The essays in this book provide a stimulating historical and cultural inquiry into the multiplicity of meanings attributed to one prophylactic: the condom. Given the vast array of sexual attitudes toward condom usage within American culture and around the world, Culture and the Condom will provoke readers into examining significant dominant discourses and alternative perspectives by viewing condoms through the lens of cinematic and television imagery, artistic representations, statistical analyses, commercial advertising, and animation.

This book is about the desire of a sixteen year-old high school student, Nic James, to 'be a condom' as his future career. The expression of that desire, during a lesson on Careers, not only threw the class teacher into a state of delirium and embarrassment, in the presence of the supervising Teacher Education professor, but led to earthshaking and transformational changes in the perception and thinking of the condom. It also brought together a team of experts who demonstrated, through analysis and hard empirical evidence, that the condom has two distinct characteristics: a physical aspect, the aspect by which it is known, generally, by most persons; and an inherent spirit that drives anyone, possessed with that spirit, to do only good deeds. These inherent virtues, values and qualities, with which the condom is endowed, are the moral equivalent of those generally seen and accepted as noble and beneficial to the human person. What is interesting here is that the expression of the student to have a career of that kind has brought together persons of significance in this nation state to discuss how the condom spirit, the condom mentality, can literally revolutionize the thinking and behavior of all those smart enough to submit themselves to the 'condomization process, at a newly established Condom Academy.' The series of events, meetings, personal disclosures, admissions and confessions are enough to blow the reader's mind.

In 2009, 16 and Pregnant premiered on MTV, closely followed by the spinoffs Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2. Because of their controversial portrayals of teenage mothers, the shows have received ongoing media attention. While some argue that the programs could play a factor in reducing the number of teen pregnancies, others claim the shows exploit young women and glamorize their situations. Among these debates, there have been surprisingly few in-depth discourses that discuss the roles such shows have on teenage audiences. In MTV and Teen Pregnancy: Critical Essays on 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, contributors from a variety of backgrounds and expertise offer potent essays about these programs. Divided into four parts, the book tackles the controversial representations of teen pregnancy from various disciplines. Part I explores gendered social norms and the shows’ roles as either educational resources or idealized depictions of teenage motherhood. Part II prompts readers to consider the intersections of race, class, gender, and the social and cultural power structures often glossed over in these programs. Part III focuses on teenage fathers, the portrayal of masculinity, and “good” vs. “bad” parents. Part IV draws from TVs representations of reality to discuss the impact of these shows on the viewing audience. This section includes a narrative from a teen mother who argues that the shows do not accurately reflect the life she leads. As the debates about 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom continue, this collection provides a valuable critical discourse to be used both inside and outside the classroom. Those engaged in courses on gender and women’s studies, as well as media studies, social work, and family and childhood development, will find MTV and Teen Pregnancy especially insightful—as will those involved in community outreach programs, not to mention teens and young mothers themselves.

Righteous Rebels written by Patrick Range McDonald and has been published by Prospect Park Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-17 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In this thought-provoking portrait of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the world’s largest HIV/AIDS medical care provider, award-winning journalist Patrick Range McDonald reveals the nonprofit’s unlikely rise from a feisty grassroots organization during the 1980s AIDS crisis in Los Angeles to its position today as an aggressive, global leader in the ongoing fight to control HIV and AIDS. This riveting story highlights the motivations behind AHF’s life-saving efforts, its battles against (and alliances with) governments and various political establishments, and its work today to provide free HIV treatment and prevention services to vulnerable, lower-income people in more than thirty countries. With unrestricted, insider access, McDonald follows AHF for a year as it clashes with the Obama administration, the state of Nevada, and the World Health Organization. He interviews AHF’s key players, including firebrand president Michael Weinstein, and he travels to AHF outposts around the globe, from Miami to Uganda, Cambodia to Russia, Estonia to South Africa. Along the way, McDonald discovers that AHF is a passionate, smart, and tenacious “people power” organization that brings hope and change to nearly all corners of the world. Beyond its work as a highly effective global AIDS organization, the AHF story also provides a blueprint for every kind of righteous rebel who wants to make the world a better place.

Writers such as Martin Amis, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Michael Benedikt, Kim Addonizio, Michelle Chalfoun, Armistead Maupin, John Irving, Anne Rice, and Elizabeth Benedict, all of whom contribute to this collection, have described in story, novel or poem the sometimes funny, sometimes touching, sometimes pathetic moments that confront their characters when dealing with this artifact of contemporary civilization, the condom.Mate and female, young and old, straight and gay -- their characters reflect the changes in concepts of intimacy, contact, contagion, and death as they are connected with the act of making love. They are some of the most vital subjects confronting our society today. These twenty-eight pieces are often wry, witty commentaries on human foibles, things we might never discuss with a stranger but would love to read about. Here is a correction with a high degree of Literary merit as well as a good sense of humor. Getting It On will be published in February 1999 to coincide with National Condom Week. With a literary pedigree as well as a social conscience, this collection is certain to engage, edify, and amuse.
