The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1963, volume 3, contains the messages and fellowship given by Brother Witness Lee from July 13 through September 1, 1963, with the exception of messages he gave in a series on the Gospel of John, which are published in Life-study of John (not included in The Collected Works). The eight sections that constitute this volume are composed largely of messages that were given during the summer training held in Los Angeles and Altadena, California, from July 13 through August 22. The training covered four main areas: life, truth, the church, and service. The messages on life and on truth were given in the evening of each Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday, and the messages on the church and on service were given in the evening of each Thursday. The messages given in the evening focused on these four main areas, and the messages given in the morning were devoted to fellowship concerning personal problems, spiritual problems, the church, the local churches, the Lord's Day gathering, practical service, prayer, and Christian practices. The contents of this volume are as follows: 1. Eighteen messages concerning life given on July 13 through August 20 as part of the summer training. These messages have been published under the title Basic Principles of the Experience of Life. One message, chapter 9, is included also in The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1965, volume 3, as chapter 8 of Our Human Spirit. 2. The five messages on truth given on July 13 through 22 as part of the summer training. Four of these messages have been published previously under the title The Building of God. However, in researching for The Collected Works, a fifth message was discovered. 3. Six messages on service given on July 18 through August 22 as part of the summer training. These messages have been published under the title Basic Principles for the Service in theChurch Life. Chapters 1 through 3 are included also in The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1969, volume 1, as chapters 6 through 8 of To Serve in the Human Spirit. 4. Six messages on the church given on July 18 through August 22 as part of the summer training. These messages have been published under the title Basic Principles for the Practice of the Church Life. 5. Messages 6 through 13 of the messages on truth given from July 23 through August 3 as part of the Summer Training. These messages have been published under the title The Work of the Holy Spirit. 6. Messages 14 through 18 of the messages on truth given from August 6 through 13 as part of the Summer Training. These messages have been published under the title A Brief Definition of the Kingdom of the Heavens. 7. Fourteen miscellaneous messages given in Los Angeles between July 16 and September 1. These messages are included in this volume under the title Miscellaneous Messages. 8. Miscellaneous fellowship given by Brother Lee to the saints in the Los Angeles area from July 19 through August 24. These messages are included in this volume under the title Miscellaneous Speakings. The contents of this section were composed from personal notes taken by brothers who were present in the meetings. Brother Lee gave four additional messages in Los Angeles during this period of time--on July 26 and August 9, 14, and 20--for which no record has been found.

The majority of Christians in China over the course of the last century have worshipped not in missionary-founded churches or in congregations affiliated with the contemporary Three-Self Patriotic Movement or Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, but in independent and unregistered churches, often labeled "house churches." From the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements within the mission-church landscape of the early twentieth century, to the Calvinist Reformed movement in the present-day Protestant church, the vibrant faith life and extraordinary church growth of this sector of Chinese Christianity offer a fascinating witness and lesson to the world church. Yet despite the size of their congregations and the spread of their teachings, the theologies of these independent and unregistered churches have drawn much less academic attention than those of mission-church or "state church" theologians. This volume presents a selection of new studies on "house church" theologians and theologies. These begin in the early twentieth century with studies of the Spiritual Gifts movement in Shandong and the nature of Pentecostalism in Hong Kong, and arrive in the present with essays on the changing role of women's leadership in the church, given the spread of Reformed thought and the theological implications of Westminsterian Neo-Calvinism in China. The second section of the volume is devoted to the theological writings and lives of the two most prominent independent church figures of the twentieth century: Wang Mingdao and Ni Tuosheng (Watchman Nee). These chapters include studies of spiritual theology; of Ni's doctrine of humanity, his views on salvation, and his prison letters; and of Wang Mingdao's life and moral thought, his Confucian beliefs, and his understanding of the relationship of Christians to the state. The third section of the volume foregrounds church voices like the fundamentalist Samuel Lamb and the mediating figure Yang Shaotang, and considers local developments in Roman Catholicism in light of Vatican reforms.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1990, volume 3, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from August 15 through November 24, 1990. Brother Lee remained in Anaheim, California, from the first part of May until the end of the third week in August. During that time he visited Long Beach, California. At the end of August Brother Lee visited San Francisco, San Jose, and Berkeley, California. In early September he returned to Anaheim and remained there until the middle of October. During that period he briefly visited San Diego and San Bernardino, California. In the middle of October Brother Lee traveled to the Far East and remained there until the first part of November. During that period he visited Taipei, Taiwan, and then Kota Kinabalu, Sibu, Kuching, and Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. In the middle of November he returned to Anaheim and remained there until the end of the year. The contents of this volume are divided into ten sections, as follows: 1. Six messages given in Anaheim, California, on August 15 through September 26. These messages were previously published in a book entitled The Prophecy of the Four "Sevens" in the Bible and are included in this volume under the same title. 2. Ten messages given in San Francisco, San Jose, and Berkeley, California, on August 24 through September 2. They were previously published in a book entitled The Economy and Dispensing of God and are included in this volume under the same title. Chapters 1 through 4 and 6 were spoken in Chinese. 3. Four messages given in San Francisco and Berkeley, California, on August 26 through September 3. They are included in this volume under the title Fellowship with the Church in San Francisco, California, and with the Young People, the College Students, and the Church in Berkeley, California. 4. A message given in Berkeley, California, on September 2. This message was previously published in a booklet entitled God, Education, and Character. This book presents a comprehensive account of the historical development of the Charismatic Movement in Taiwan, placing it within the context of Taiwan’s religious and political history. Judith C. P. Lin unearths invaluable sources of the Japan Apostolic Mission, the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International Formosa Chapter, and Jean Stone Willans’ short stay in Taiwan in 1968. Lin describes and analyzes how the efforts of 1970s charismatic missionaries in Taiwan—including Pearl Young, Nicholas Krushnisky, Donald Dale, Allen J. Swanson, and Ross Paterson—shaped the theological convictions of later Taiwanese charismatic leaders. She also explores significant developments in the Taiwanese Church which contributed to the gradual and widespread recognition of the Charismatic Movement in Taiwan from 1980 to 1995. Lin offers a thorough treatment of history, reconfigures historiography from a Taiwanese perspective, and challenges the academic circle to take seriously the “Taiwanese consciousness” when engaging Taiwan’s history.
