Increased international interdependence - globalization - has also greatly increased the potential for international conflict in various areas such as trade, competition, the environment, and human rights. Observers have counted up to 40 international courts that serve to settle such conflicts. What are adequate criteria to measure the effectiveness of international courts? What factors explain the differences in their success? What factors explain the differences of nation-state governments in delegating competence to international courts in the first place? Should there be any additional courts? This volume assembles ten papers and comments that contain first steps in answering these questions. Their authors are legal scholars and economists, but also political scientists and philosophers. With this volume the "Jahrbuch für Neue Politische Ökonomie" has changed its title to "Conferences on New Political Economy".

The influence of political developments on the evolution of economic thought is the main theme behind this book. As the authors reveal throughout the book, history has shown many times that political events can trigger the formulation of new economic conceptions that in turn influence the future economic development of a country. The papers are arranged into five main areas of interest: monetary theory and policy economic crisis in France and the emergence of the physiocratic school the co-evolution of political ideas and economic thought in different countries and periods in Europe continuity and discontinuity in Russian economic thought attempted economic solutions to the problems posed by the Great Depression and the associated political transformation. Political Events and Economic Ideas will hold great appeal and interest for researchers and scholars of political thought, as well as historians of economic thought worldwide.

This collection of essays is a contribution to an understanding of the research themes to which Sylos Labini dedicated attention: the themes of an economic science interpreted as political economy in the Classical tradition, i.e. as a logically rigorous but not purely technical effort to understand the world in which we live, as the basis for acting in it in the pursuit of common welfare.

This book applies a multiparadigmatic philosophical frame of analysis to the global political economy. Crossing two disciplines and lines of literature—social philosophy and global political economy—this book considers seven aspects of global political economy and discusses each aspect from four diverse paradigmatic viewpoints: functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist, and radical structuralist. The four paradigms are founded upon different assumptions about the nature of social science and the nature of society. Each paradigm generates theories, concepts, and analytical tools which are different from those of other paradigms; developing an understanding of the different paradigms leads to a better understanding of the multi-faceted nature of the subject matter. In this book, the first chapter reviews the four paradigms. Each of the next seven chapters provides four paradigmatic explanations for each of the seven aspects of the global political economy. The final chapter concludes by recommending further paradigmatic diversity. This book will be of particular interest to students and researchers interested in political economy, heterodox economics, political science and international relations.

Inflation Expectations written by Peter J. N. Sinclair and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-16 with Business & Economics categories.

Inflation is regarded by the many as a menace that damages business and can only make life worse for households. Keeping it low depends critically on ensuring that firms and workers expect it to be low. So expectations of inflation are a key influence on national economic welfare. This collection pulls together a galaxy of world experts (including Roy Batchelor, Richard Curtin and Staffan Linden) on inflation expectations to debate different aspects of the issues involved. The main focus of the volume is on likely inflation developments. A number of factors have led practitioners and academic observers of monetary policy to place increasing emphasis recently on inflation expectations. One is the spread of inflation targeting, invented in New Zealand over 15 years ago, but now encompassing many important economies including Brazil, Canada, Israel and Great Britain. Even more significantly, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan and the United States Federal Bank are the leading members of another group of monetary institutions all considering or implementing moves in the same direction. A second is the large reduction in actual inflation that has been observed in most countries over the past decade or so. These considerations underscore the critical – and largely underrecognized - importance of inflation expectations. They emphasize the importance of the issues, and the great need for a volume that offers a clear, systematic treatment of them. This book, under the steely editorship of Peter Sinclair, should prove very important for policy makers and monetary economists alike.
