Our influence only goes so far, and when those children reach the pre-teen and teenage years, it may seem to have disappeared completely. Yet at no time in a kid's life is their parents' positive, godly influence more critical. For parents who are concerned that their child is pulling away, following poor role models, or making choices that will lead to pain and difficulty, Mike Berry has good news: it's not too late. He offers parents nine keys to maximizing and leveraging their influence to help their children through these difficult years and develop a relationship with them that can weather any storm.

A searching, eloquent memoir about the joys and hardships of open adoption God and Jetfire is a mother's account of her decision to surrender her son in an open adoption and of their relationship over the twelve years that follow. Facing an unplanned pregnancy at twenty-two, Amy Seek and her ex-boyfriend begin an exhaustive search for a family to raise their child. They sift through hundreds of "Dear Birth Mother" letters, craft an extensive questionnaire, and interview numerous potential couples. Despite the immutability of the surrender, it does little to diminish Seek's newfound feelings of motherhood. Once an ambitious architecture student, she struggles to reconcile her sadness with the hope that she's done the best for her son, a struggle complicated by her continued, active presence in his life. For decades, closed adoptions were commonplace. Now, new laws are guaranteeing adoptees' access to birth records, and open adoption is on the rise. God and Jetfire is the rare memoir that explores the intricate dynamics and exceptional commitment of an open-adoption relationship from the perspective of a birth mother searching for her place within it. Written with literary poise and distinction, God and Jetfire is a story of a life divided between grief and gratitude, regret and joy. It is an elegy for a lost motherhood, a celebration of a family gained, and an apology to a beloved son.

"I was adopted into a loving family shortly after I was born on Valentine's Day 1962. My adoptive parents never kept it a secret from me, although they had no details on my birth parents. In those days, adoption officials were bound by law to keep my file sealed. I enjoyed what can only be called an idyllic childhood, so my interest in my biological parents was virtually nonexistent until after I had raised my own family. I was thirty-nine when I began a search for my birth parents. I would meet my birth mother in mid 2001, followed by my birth father in early 2002. My friends and wider family were always very curious about how I felt during this period of reunion. Over and over, I would try to explain the emotional roller coaster and how the reunion process affected me directly. It was difficult for me to explain the range of feelings that I went through and further, my conclusion of my birth parents overall. I found it hard to express in words how I reacted to it all; this from a man who writes as part of my profession. There is absolutely nothing easy about the adoption reunion process. One is not only concerned about the three primary actors, but also a host of half-siblings and unrelated spouses. Some will be positively affected and some will not accept the reunion at face value. Added to all of this is the fact that most birth parents, having given up their child for adoption, then almost universally keep that child a secret to everyone, even immediate family members. The result is, and was in my case, that the immediate family of birth parents are surprised by the sudden appearance of a 'child from the distant past.' Most importantly, I found that all three of us in the core reunion brought into the process all their personal issues, history and the many stresses that we all face in our modern world. My elder sister started to look for her birth parents at the tender age of sixteen; with very tragic results. I decided to write my own story only after many years of struggling internally with myself on how to proceed with the narrative. The result is a suspenseful story around a doctor and his patient." Mark is haunted by his adoption following the reunion with his mother. His good friend Rob, also an adopted son, recommends the mysterious Dr. Arlington as the man to listen to Mark's confession. Now, however, Rob has disappeared. Mark hopes that Dr. Arlington can shed light on the dark path his life has taken since the adoption reunion. It is a narrative told both from a present standpoint and a flashback perspective of significant and colorful characters from Mark's past. Many people from Mark' past have had a great influence on how he turned out as a man. Mark's reunion experience sadly coincides with the passing of some of these people and thus, affects his thoughts and actions during his later interactions with his birth parents. In the end, his reunion experience is not a happy one, though much has changed in the time leading up to his first appointment with the mysterious Arlington. The mysterious Doctor's office occupies a solitary room within a decaying old house set far off above the city. Mark is quickly caught up in a high stakes game of cat and mouse as the Doctor questions Mark on his past recollections. Mark must wrestle with his demons while trying to determine what has happened to Rob. Mark relates a story about his reunion and his subsequent experiences immediately following the discovery of his birth parents. Mark needs answers and he may have finally found them. Can Mark finally reach down deep to tell the Doctor everything, or keep holding onto past secrets too dark to reveal? Most importantly, can Mark handle the truth of his own demons while trying to determine Dr. Arlington's real identity? What about Mark's warning that adopted people should beware of secrets and unseen dangers in finding out your blood parents? "For all those adopted sons and daughters out there and anyone curious, read this!"

The Greatest Gift My Parents Gave Me is a tribute to the efforts of the critical figures in the adoption process, the biological mother and the adoptive parents. Ever since that day of conception, the biological mother faced and conquered adversities of many sorts, leading to the development of qualities that are gifted to her now-adopted child. The adoptive parents contribute their own gifts as they encourage and guide the adoptee into adulthood. From the importance of an individual's free will to the value of one's faith, the book explores a total of sixteen gifts, including what inarguably is the greatest gift that could bless anyone. So whether you're connected to an adoption or not, maybe preparing for parenthood or just a woman unsure about the future of a pregnancy, may you be inspired, moved, and your heart uplifted by the stories, thoughts, and confessions shared in this book.

Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight written by Dan Bucatinsky and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-05 with Humor categories.

From actor/writer/producer Dan Bucatinsky, executive producer of NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?, a collection of snort-milk-through-your-nose funny stories of parenthood that will obliterate the boundaries of gender and sexual orientation, and sweep readers up on a journey into fatherhood—warts and all. In 2005, Dan Bucatinsky and his partner, Don Roos, found themselves in an LA delivery room, decked out in disposable scrubs from shower cap to booties, to welcome their adopted baby girl—launching their frantic yet memorable adventures into fatherhood. Two and a half years later, the same birth mother—a heroically generous, pack-a-day teen with a passion for Bridezilla marathons and Mountain Dew—delivered a son into the couple’s arms. In Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight? Bucatinsky moves deftly from sidesplitting stories about where kids put their fingers to the realization that his athletic son might just grow up to be straight and finally to a reflection on losing his own father just as he’s becoming one. Bucatinsky’s soul-baring and honest stories tap into that all-encompassing, and very human, hunger to be a parent—and the life-changing and often ridiculous road to getting there.
