Fittingness explores the nature, roles, and applications of the notion of fittingness in contemporary normative and metanormative philosophy. The fittingness relation is the relation in which a response stands to a feature of the world when that feature merits, or is worthy of, that response. In the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, this notion of fittingness played a prominent role in the theories of the period's most influential ethical theorists, and in recent years it has regained prominence, promising to enrich the theoretical resources of contemporary theorists working in the philosophy of normativity. This volume is the first central discussion of the notion of fit to date. It is composed of seventeen new essays covering a range of topics including the nature and epistemology of fittingness, the relation between fittingness and reasons, the normativity of fittingness, fittingness and value theory, and the role of fittingness in theorizing about responsibility. Radical wrongdoing can have devastating effects for entire communities, beyond individual trauma. Across cultures, different coping strategies that help victims to get on with their lives range from individual therapy to collective rituals and ceremonies. This new book distances itself from the predominantly individual take on forgiveness, and concentrates on its collective and cultural dimensions in a broad historical, religious and cultural context. By developing forgiveness as a particular speech act based on a precarious mutual acceptance between victims and perpetrators, the book suggests a new approach to forgiveness. While the atonement is a central component of Christianity, there is little agreement in the tradition about how it should be understood. This book develops and defends a novel relational theory of atonement inspired by African relational ethics. This book brings important themes from African ethics into conversation with the contemporary philosophical literature on the atonement. The author employs an African relational ethic that says an act is right inasmuch as it is friendly where friendliness is understood as identifying with others and expressing solidarity with them. This relational ethic sheds new light on the problem of sin, by emphasising the relational disharmony it produces between God and humans. When applied to the Atonement, the passion and death of Christ can be understood as an ultimate act of friendliness in reconciling humanity to God. The author also explores questions about the nature of justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation. He shows how constructive punishment ought to be included in genuine forms of reconciliation and as such how punishment can be part of his Relational Theory of the Atonement. The last part of the book develops alternative theories of the atonement based on two important African normative theories located in personhood and in life force. Overall, the book makes the case that the Relational Theory of the Atonement should be considered as a serious competitor to longer-established Western theories. A Relational Theory of the Atonement will appeal to scholars and advanced students interested in philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, African philosophy, and comparative philosophy.

Oliver Hallich plädiert dafür, die Frage nach der moralischen Erlaubtheit des Lügens durch diejenige nach der sozialen Angemessenheit oder Unangemessenheit des Lügens zu ersetzen und sie insofern zu entmoralisieren. Eine Lüge, so die These, ist ein Beziehungsphänomen. Lügen heißt: sozial handeln. Es heißt, sich zum anderen auf eine bestimmte Weise in Beziehung zu setzen. Wenn wir lügen, definieren wir eine Beziehung. Genauer: Wir definieren eine Beziehung als eine Beziehung der Gegnerschaft. Das ist manchmal, nämlich wenn eine Beziehung tatsächlich eine Beziehung der Gegnerschaft ist, angemessen und manchmal nicht. Im Ergebnis bezieht Hallich eine auf deontische Kategorien des Verboten- oder Erlaubtseins verzichtende Position, der zufolge Lügen in Abhängigkeit vom sozialen Kontext manchmal als angemessen und manchmal als unangemessen einzustufen sind.
