Non solo per l'acuta sensibilità che – nonostante tutte le apparenze – Heidegger ha mostrato nei confronti dei problemi fondamentali della nostra epoca: il venir meno della coscienza religiosa, la crisi dei valori tradizionali e la sfiducia nei confronti di una ragione meramente strumentale, la fine dell'assoluto sulla terra e il chiudersi dell'orizzonte epocale della tecnica. Ma anche e soprattutto per il fatto che, con una radicalità che nessun altro dopo Hegel aveva osato, Heidegger ha saputo ripensare nel suo insieme l'accadere della filosofia occidentale, riproponendo come problema filosofico la questione dei fondamenti dell'epoca presente e della sua connessione essenziale con il pensiero greco. In quest'orizzonte, la presenza di Aristotele nel pensiero heideggeriano non è circoscrivibile nelle forme di una semplice interpretazione. Essa è piuttosto una presenza generalizzata che pervade tutta l'opera di Heidegger e che si configura nei termini di una assimilazione rapace e di un confronto mirante a una appropriazione radicale dell'ontologia e della filosofia pratica di Aristotele.

Many people consider Martin Heidegger the most important German philosopher of the twentieth century. He is indisputably controversial and influential. Athough much has been written about Heidegger, this may be the best single volume covering his life, career, and thought. For all its breadth and complexity, Heidegger's perspective is quite simple: he is concerned with the meaning of Being as disclosure. Heidegger's life was almost as simple. He was a German professor, except for a brief but significant period in which he supported the Nazi regime. While that departure from philosophy continues to haunt his name and work, one must question whether his thought from 1912 to 1976 should be measured by the yardstick of his politics from May, 1933, through February, 1934. Th is anthology addresses his complex but simple thought and his simple but complex life. In a real sense, Sheehan claims, there is no content to Heidegger's topic and legacy, only a method. But method must not be taken to mean a technique or procedure for philosophical thinking. Rather, the topic of Heidegger's thought and his pursuit of that topic, the "what" and the "how," are one and the same thing. Heidegger writes, "Alles ist Weg," "Everything is way," and man's Being is to be on-the-way in essential movement. Heidegger, argues in our essence we humans are the topic and the point is not to be led there so much as to come to know what we already know and to become what we already are. This brilliant collection confirms this truism, and is an excellent introduction to the work of this seminal thinker.

In Beyond the Subject Gianni Vattimo offers a reading of Nietzsche and Heidegger that shows how the premises to overcome the metaphysical Subject were already embedded in their thought. Vattimo makes a case for a Nietzsche who is not concerned with the structure and glorification of the Overman, but rather with its opposite, by showing how it is the single individual who must see and accept his/her potential and then excel and develop an inner strength and ethic. He reads Heidegger as concerned with the inevitable distortion present in every interpretation, which, when confronted and accepted, humbles us to deal with a less overarching telos or Grund, and makes us more attuned to contingency and interpersonal communication—what Vattimo calls a “weakened” notion of being. The ongoing publication of Heidegger's complete works has called into question the interpretive and translative practices that have historicized Heidegger's thinking through the adaptation of categories and mind-sets inherited from metaphysics. Ivo De Gennaro argues that the posthumous treatises in particular - many of which have yet to be translated into English - show that the "other onset of thinking" that Being and Time inaugurated and which those historicizing accounts have interpreted and translated away, has already taken place. This book, on the other hand, speaks solely from that other onset, that of being itself. While arguing the "one-pointedness" of Heidegger's entire path of thinking, De Gennaro draws mainly on the posthumous treatises to offer both a provisional exploration of, and an introduction to, a thinking whose sense and implications have barely begun to emerge.
