ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM has historically been defined by male artists, who rose to fame in post-World War II America. While women were practicing unique modes of painting alongside their male counterparts, they were given little emphasis or attention within the canon of art history both then and now. Confronting the Canvas: Women of Abstraction does not attempt to rewrite history, but instead it identifies and gives prominence to emerging and mid-career women working in the field of gestural abstraction today. Consisting of six contemporary painters--Keltie Ferris, Maya Hayuk, Jill Nathanson, Fran O'Neill, Jackie Saccoccio, and Anke Weyer--this exhibition expands the discourse of abstraction in the United States over the past ten years and focuses on the performance of painting. It explores each artist's signature style and poses questions about potential relationships between abstraction and gender. In the large-scale paintings of pours, stains, strokes, and drips, the use of gesture via new techniques is redefined and even reclaimed as the younger generation of abstract painters pay homage to their forerunners. Here, one discovers the significant role of women painters in the contemporary history (or "her-story") of abstraction. Confronting the Canvas: Women of Abstraction is one of the first museum exhibitions to focus solely on contemporary female painters.

In this study, Alan Paskow first asks why fictional characters, such as Hamlet and Anna Karenina, matter to us and how they are able to emotionally affect us. He then applies these questions to painting, demonstrating that paintings beckon us to view their contents as real. What we visualise in paintings, he argues, is not simply in our heads but in our world. Paskow also situates the phenomenological approach to the experience of painting in relation to methodological assumptions and claims in analytic aesthetics as well as in contemporary schools of thought, particularly Marxist, feminist, and deconstructionist.

Confronting Urban Legacy written by Xiangming Chen and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-18 with Social Science categories.

Confronting Urban Legacy fills a critical lacuna in urban scholarship. As almost all of the literature focuses on global cities and megacities, smaller, secondary cities, which actually hold the majority of the world’s population, are either critically misunderstood or unexamined in their entirety. This neglect not only biases scholars’ understanding of social and spatial dynamics toward very large global cities but also maintains a void in students’ learning. This book specifically explores the transformative relationship between globalization and urban transition in Hartford, Connecticut, while including crucial comparative chapters on other forgotten New England cities: Portland, Maine, along with Lawrence and Springfield, Massachusetts. Hartford’s transformation carries a striking imprint of globalization that has been largely missed: from its 17th century roots as New England first inland colonial settlement, to its emergence as one of the world’s most prosperous manufacturing and insurance metropolises, to its present configuration as one of America’s poorest post-industrial cities, which by still retaining a globally lucrative FIRE Sector is nevertheless surrounded by one of the nation’s most prosperous metropolitan regions. The myriad of dilemmas confronting Hartford calls for this book to take an interdisciplinary approach. The editors’ introduction places Hartford in a global comparative perspective; Part I provides rich historical delineations of the many rises and (not quite) falls of Hartford; Part II offers a broad contemporary treatment of Hartford by dissecting recent immigration and examining the demographic and educational dimensions of the city-suburban divide; and Part III unpacks Hartford’s current social, economic, and political situation and discusses what the city could become. Using the lessons from this book on Hartford and other underappreciated secondary cities in New England, urban scholars, leaders, and residents alike can gain a number of essential insights—both theoretical and practical.
