This book provides the family histories and lineages of numerous long-standing Southern Maryland families. Years of research, documentation and verification have gone into gathering the information covered within these pages. The majority of the information within this book pertains to Charles, Prince George's and St. Mary's Counties within the Southern Maryland Region. Although southern Anne Arundel and Calvert County are also a part of the Southern Maryland area, not enough information has yet to be found/located/researched in order to be included within this book. Not to say that there aren't and won't be a few families from those counties, but there still isn't enough to fully focus or concentrate on them at this time. As further research is found, documented and verified, more history and lineage about the long-standing families from southern Anne Arundel and Calvert County will be focused on and included within future editions. I will share facts and memories of past times within Southern Maryland. I will cover as much as possible of the history (focusing on the region, counties, towns and their origins, beginnings, and progress/changes throughout the years), as well as the lineage of much of our original and long-standing families. Included: where they came from, where within the region they started out/originated, when branches from many of these families moved/migrated to throughout time, indicate what other local families they relate to, how many children each family had within each generation and their jobs/professions. Also, any diseases, ailments or disorders that our families were prone to or have had to deal with will also be included. Old photos are shared, as well as documents and family stories.

Deep Roots written by Avidit Acharya and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-10 with Political Science categories.

"Despite dramatic social transformations in the United States during the last 150 years, the South has remained staunchly conservative. Southerners are more likely to support Republican candidates, gun rights, and the death penalty, and southern whites harbor higher levels of racial resentment than whites in other parts of the country. Why haven't these sentiments evolved or changed? Deep Roots shows that the entrenched political and racial views of contemporary white southerners are a direct consequence of the region's slaveholding history, which continues to shape economic, political, and social spheres. Today, southern whites who live in areas once reliant on slavery--compared to areas that were not--are more racially hostile and less amenable to policies that could promote black progress. Highlighting the connection between historical institutions and contemporary political attitudes, the authors explore the period following the Civil War when elite whites in former bastions of slavery had political and economic incentives to encourage the development of anti-black laws and practices. Deep Roots shows that these forces created a local political culture steeped in racial prejudice, and that these viewpoints have been passed down over generations, from parents to children and via communities, through a process called behavioral path dependence. While legislation such as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act made huge strides in increasing economic opportunity and reducing educational disparities, southern slavery has had a profound, lasting, and self-reinforcing influence on regional and national politics that can still be felt today. A groundbreaking look at the ways institutions of the past continue to sway attitudes of the present, Deep Roots demonstrates how social beliefs persist long after the formal policies that created those beliefs have been eradicated."--Jacket.

Confederate Exodus written by Alan P. Marcus and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04 with History categories.

While Americans have been deeply absorbed with the topic of immigration for generations, emigration from the United States has been almost entirely ignored. Following the U.S. Civil War an estimated ten thousand Confederates left the U.S. South, most of them moving to Brazil, where they became known as "Confederados," Portuguese for "Confederates." These Southerners were the largest organized group of white Americans to ever voluntarily emigrate from the United States. In Confederate Exodus Alan P. Marcus examines the various factors that motivated this exodus, including the maneuvering of various political leaders, communities, and institutions as well as agro-economic and commercial opportunities in Brazil. Marcus considers Brazilian immigration policies, capitalism, the importance of trade and commerce, and race as salient dimensions. He also provides a new synthesis for interpreting the Confederado story and for understanding the impact of the various stakeholders who encouraged, aided, promoted, financed, and facilitated this broader emigration from the U.S. South.

James L. Meng is a retired labor relations arbitrator who was born in the mid-American steel town of Granite City, Illinois. His parents were born in Freeburg and Newton, Illinois and were active civic leaders in their community. In his formative years, James met several occasions that comprised a very interesting youth. After graduating from college, he joined the Missouri Air National Guard where he was awarded the Airman’s Medal for Valor. Afterwards he continued his education for a Master degree. He married his lovely wife, Beverly, and had two children and four grandchildren. While cleaning out his basement, he discovered several inherited boxes containing family pictures and documents. Although not a genealogist, which he says with a great deal of pride, he fortunately decided to share his information with others, both the born and unborn. This book is written to reflect the lives and personalities of real people – not just the genealogical statistics of born on date, married on date, had child one, two, three and died on this date. These were real people who realized and conquered a variety of life challenges in Germany and in their newly adopted home in America. As a nation of immigrants, we should not let their contributions be forgotten...

Roots Of Secession written by William A. Link and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-01-21 with History categories.

Offering a provocative new look at the politics of secession in antebellum Virginia, William Link places African Americans at the center of events and argues that their acts of defiance and rebellion had powerful political repercussions throughout the turbulent period leading up to the Civil War. An upper South state with nearly half a million slaves--more than any other state in the nation--and some 50,000 free blacks, Virginia witnessed a uniquely volatile convergence of slave resistance and electoral politics in the 1850s. While masters struggled with slaves, disunionists sought to join a regionwide effort to secede and moderates sought to protect slavery but remain in the Union. Arguing for a definition of political action that extends beyond the electoral sphere, Link shows that the coming of the Civil War was directly connected to Virginia's system of slavery, as the tension between defiant slaves and anxious slaveholders energized Virginia politics and spurred on the impending sectional crisis.

Slavery Religion and Regime challenged us to question the basis of a society founded on freedom for the elite and the subjugation and enslavement of natives and imported victims of slavery and slave-trading. The purpose of this book is to establish a critical theological interpretation of the interplay among the significant political, economic, and religious expressions of modernity in the founding of industrial societies then and today. The elite and justice for all while it heralds individualism, materialism, conceived in violence. The dehumanization process along with the killing of natives is a history that extends up to the present day,
